New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani snubbed Lionel Messi and picked Kylian Mbappe as his best player at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in a Winners Stay on Challenge with CBSSportsGolazo on Instagram.

Mamdani picked Riyad Mahrez over Son Heung-min at the start of the challenge. He also picked the Algerian star ahead of David Alaba, but dropped the former for Kevin De Bruyne.

However, when the Belgian playmaker was pitted against Vinicius Jr, Mamdani went for the Brazilian. He then chose Vini above Luis Diaz, but opted for Lamine Yamal over the Real Madrid star.

Next on the list was Amad Diallo, but the mayor stuck with Yamal. Proceeding with the challenge, Mamdani then picked Mohamed Salah over Yamal, Harry Kane, Achraf Hakimi and Sadio Mane.

Hailing Haaland as the greatest striker in the game currently, the New York City mayor then picked the Norwegian over Salah. Surprisingly, he also chose Haaland over Cristiano Ronaldo. Mamdani ended the challenge by picking Mbappe over Haaland and Messi.

Kylian Mbappe is having a great FIFA World Cup campaign and has registered seven goals in five games for France. Similarly, Messi has been in red-hot form at the tournament, scoring in every game and has eight goals to his name.

France will play Morocco in the quarter-final (July 8), while Argentina have a date with Switzerland on Jul y 12. The two teams are on separate sides of the World Cup bracket and could likely meet in the final, which will be a repeat of the 2022 edition.

Granit Xhaka reacts to facing Lionel Messi and Argentina in FIFA World Cup quarter-final

Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka spoke about his side’s upcoming game against Lionel Messi’s Argentina following their win over Colombia on Tuesday, July 7. The European side defeated their South American counterparts 4-3 on penalties in the Round of 16 to set a clash with the defending champions.

Xhaka spoke to reporters about qualifying for the quarter-final and playing against Messi. He said:

“That’s a great reward. Goal number one has been achieved, but when you’re in the quarter-finals, the hunger is even greater than before. Now comes the big challenge with one of the greatest players. We’re enjoying the game, and we’ll be ready.”

Switzerland has never made it past the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup. They will be hoping to make history by pulling a shocker against one of the favourites.
