BMW will officially unveil the iX5 on June 30, but we are already getting an early look after images leaked online.
Here’s our first look at the BMW iX5 EV
We knew it was almost here after BMW previewed a near-ready X5 prototype earlier this month during final calibration tests at its Spartanburg, South Carolina, manufacturing plant.
For its fifth generation, the X5 will be available with a fully electric powertrain for the first time, the iX5 60 xDrive.
Like the new iX3 and i3, the iX5 will be based on BMW’s Neue Klasse design, drive components, and technology.
It will use BMW’s sixth-generation (Gen6) eDrive system with an 800V architecture, which offers considerably faster charging speeds, improved efficiency, and a longer driving range, even in real-world conditions.
Although it shares the Neue Klasse design, the iX5 will not ride on the dedicated EV platform. Instead, it will be underpinned by an updated version of its CLAR platform, which powers the current X5 and supports both EV and ICE powertrains.
The iX5 will use a massive 144 kWh battery in the US and 141 kWh in Europe, the largest in any of its EVs yet.
BMW has yet to reveal range estimates, but since the iX3 50 xDrive has a WLTP range of up to 500 miles (805 km), the iX5, with an even bigger battery, may top it. The vehicle’s size and weight will also play a role. It will be equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup, delivering a combined 578 hp (425 kW).
Ahead of its debut on Tuesday, June 30, images of the iX5 60 xDrive leaked online, revealing the electric SUV in full for the first time.
The images from @Kero_Wolf (via Cochespias) offer a good look at the new model from the front, side, and rear. While it’s hard to judge its size, the iX5 looks similar to the iX3, with a few distinct design elements that set it apart.
The first thing you’ll notice is the “X-style” headlights, which are distinct from the slanted ones on the iX3.
The lower part of the bumper looks a bit sportier, with a blacked-out, closed-off front end that almost resembles an M Sport model.
From the side, the silhouette is similar to the iX3, but the door handles on the iX5 are located under the window rather than the flush handles you’d expect.

In the US, the 2027 BMW iX3 50 xDrive is available to order starting at $61,500. It has an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 434 miles. The larger iX5 will likely be a bit more expensive at around $75,000.
The 2027 BMW iX5 will make its debut by the end of summer, with sales expected to begin in early 2027. It will be available in electric, plug-in hybrid, mild hybrid, gas, and hydrogen powertrains.
