The “best” Range Rover has an electric powertrain, according to JLR’s chief growth officer, Lennard Hoornik. Although it may outperform its gas-powered counterpart, the Range Rover EV won’t be cheap, with prices that could top $150,000.

Range Rover Electric prices will match the gas version

Although the Range Rover Electric was initially expected to launch by the end of last year, JLR confirmed during its investor day last week that it was still on track to go on sale by the end of 2026.

JLR has yet to reveal prices, but Hoornik hinted they could be fairly expensive. “We are really trying to go against what is happening in the market trend,” he told investors (via Automotive News).

Unlike most luxury brands, such as BMW, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, JLR expects buyers to pay more for an EV than for gas and hybrid vehicles.

The current gas-powered Range Rover starts at €146,100 in Germany, or around $165,000, meaning the EV version may be priced even higher.

In the UK, the electric version will cost about the same as the Autobiography edition, according to Autocar, at just under £150,000 ($200,900).

It may be more expensive, but the Range Rover Electric will also deliver more power and a quieter drive than its gas counterpart.

The best Range Rover is electric

“Our job is to explain that the best Range Rover ever actually has an electric powertrain,” Hoornik said.

Range Rover’s first EV will use a 118 kWh battery, providing a range of 373 miles (600 km). It will also be equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain, delivering a combined 542 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.

That’s more than the 4.4-liter V-8 version with 537 hp and about the same as the plug-in hybrid Range Rover with up to 543 hp.

Range Rover’s electric SUV will also include several new features, including single-pedal driving and a twin-chamber air suspension, for on- and off-road driving.

The Range Rover Electric is one of five new EVs JLR is launching over the next 18 months. Following the flagship SUV, Range Rover will introduce the smaller, more affordable Sport EV. The Range Rover Sport starts at €93,500, or around $106,000.

    What’s Next?

Defender is preparing to launch its first electric SUV. The Defender brand will play a key role in JLR’s plans to drive growth in the US, CEO PB Balaji told investors last week.

JLR announced plans to launch a new Defender SUV in the US in collaboration with Jeep maker, Stellantis.

The first EVs based on the EMA platform, including the Defender Sport, Range Rover Velar, and Evoque, will also be slightly more expensive than the current gas-powered models.

Jaguar is still set to become an all-electric luxury brand. The Type 01, the luxury brand’s second attempt at an all-electric vehicle following the i-Pace, will launch in October, starting at around $150,000.

To preserve resale value, the company will focus mainly on leasing, offering longer plans while becoming more involved in the resale process. Hoornik said JLR will create “second, third, fourth, and fifth life for the car.

By managing inventory and limiting sales, Hoornik explained that “We are making sure that we never oversell or overflow the market with stock.”
