Fans were amused by tennis icon Serena Williams’ nonchalant reaction to her return to the singles event at the Wimbledon Championships after receiving a wildcard. Weeks after she announced her return to the professional circuit in a doubles event, the All England Club confirmed that the legendary tennis player will once again compete on the grass court in the singles event.

Williams built her unparalleled career by lifting the Wimbledon singles trophy seven times in 2022, 2003, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2016. The tournament announced the much-awaited comeback on Sunday, writing:

“This is not a drill. @serenawilliams will compete in the 2026 ladies’ singles at Wimbledon as a wild card.”

The announcement sent a wave of excitement amongst fans, one of whom reacted on the post, writing:

“We prayed for times like this 🥹.”

The announcement also left fellow tennis players stunned, with the former Canadian Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard writing:

    “Screaming crying throwing up.”

However, the 23-time Grand Slam champion appeared to be calm and relaxed about the most-awaited return in the tennis circuit. Following the announcement, Williams wrote about a duck, duck, goose game she played rather than posting about tennis.

“Just finished a mean game of duck, duck, goose.”

Fans were amazed by her casual approach to the blockbuster announcement.

“Lol pretending like your WC ain’t no big deal. 😭,” fan wrote.

Another fan expressed their marvel at Williams’ low-key response, writing:

sure. 😂 pretending like your WC isn’t a big deal. I hope you stretched first,” a fan added.

    More reactions:

“You’re so unserious 😅😅,” one of the fans chimed in.

Sounds like a good element to add to your training schedule. 😂 Good luck, @Wimbledon,” a fan reacted.

Serena Williams has also received a wildcard with her sister, Venus Williams, to compete in the doubles event at the Grass-court Grand Slam.

Serena Williams made her return to professional tennis at the HSBC Championships with Victoria Mboko. However, they concluded their run with one win after Mboko sustained an injury in her singles match. Following her return, Williams reflected on her approach towards her comeback, saying she is not focused on winning because she has already achieved so much. She now wants to enjoy the journey without putting any pressure on herself.

“I don’t need to win,” she said. “I’ve won more than most people have in their whole lives, so for me it’s not important to me, and it’s important that I keep reminding myself of that, because I don’t have anything to prove, I don’t have anything to lose. This whole journey, I’m putting no pressure on myself. I’ve had enough pressure.” (via hellomagazine.com)

Serena Williams won the title for the first time in 2002 after beating her older sister Venus in the final.
