Ford Mustang Mach-e is on borrowed time as more affordable EVs roll in

After discontinuing the all-electric F-150 Lightning, it looks like the Mustang Mach-E is also running out of time. Ford is preparing to launch a new generation of EVs that are more affordable, more efficient, and more profitable, starting with the $30,000 pickup in 2027.

Is Ford pulling the Mustang Mach-E?

The Mustang Mach-E remains on sale as Ford’s sole EV in the US, outside of the E-Transit van, which is for commercial use anyway.

That will change, starting next year. After announcing it had discontinued production of the electric F-150 Lightning pickup, Ford’s CEO Jim Farley admitted during an interview with CNBC that the “very high-end EVs, the $50K, 70K, $80,000 vehicles, they just weren’t selling.”

Ford was also losing a significant amount of money producing them. Its EV business, Model e, lost $4.8 billion in 2025 and expects to lose another $4 billion to $4.5 billion in 2026.

As it phases out its first-generation EVs, including the F-150 Lightning, the Mustang Mach-E appears to be on its way out as well.

The Mach-E will remain on sale until at least 2027, when the first vehicle based on its new Universal EV (UEV) platform arrives, a midsize four-door electric pickup that will start at around $30,000.

Ford has made it clear that the UEV platform “will not be used for the Mustang Mach-E.” The company explained that “this platform was built from a clean sheet to maximize vehicle efficiency.”

While the first vehicle is a pickup, the UEV platform supports a wide range of body styles, “from small cars to vans,” Ford said, but it has yet to confirm that it will launch an SUV.

Considering Ford delayed the Mach-E refresh until the end of the decade, according to Automotive News, it may be on its way out sooner, rather than later. The Mach-E is also built in Mexico, meaning it’s subject to Trump’s import tariffs.

With its debut coming up, Ford’s midsize EV pickup was captured driving in Long Beach last week. The prototype had a QR code hidden in the camouflage that takes you to a secret website dedicated to the upcoming model.

Ford announced on Wednesday that it had delivered the first prismatic LFP battery cells from its Blueoval Battery Park in Michigan, which will power the upcoming electric pickup and future UEV-based vehicles.

While the Mach-E isn’t necessarily expensive, starting at $37,795 in the US, it’s more of a profitability concern with Ford’s first-generation EVs.

Ford is using advanced new manufacturing methods, including unicasting, in-house hardware and software, and lower-cost LFP batteries to cut costs and greatly improve efficiency.

Will it be enough to spark a comeback? We will find out soon with Ford’s midsize EV pickup, the first UEV-based vehicle, due out in 2027.
