BYD is launching a new magnetic smart device
The world’s leading EV maker previewed its latest innovation on Tuesday — A smart magnetic device, “Flexible Buttons,” that detaches, allowing you to manage vehicle functions.
Instead of pulling out a smartphone, you can use it to control the vehicle’s infotainment, climate control, audio, and other in-car features at the push of a button, BYD said.
Since it links to BYD’s smart ecosystem via Bluetooth, the device can be taken on the go to control the vehicle remotely.
The device uses magnets, like a MagSafe on the back of your iPhone, so that it can be easily installed and charged in the vehicle.
The new in-car smart device is part of BYD’s broader expansion into smart in-vehicle software and hardware. The company also previewed a “brand-new interface” that appears to be a central magnetic hub that’s expected to connect, charge, and manage smart in-car devices.
BYD’s flagship electric SUV, the Great Tang (Datang in China), will be the first to feature the new tech, which launches on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.
After opening preorders at the Beijing Auto Show in April, BYD said the flagship electric SUV received over 100,000 preorders in its first two weeks.
Presale prices start at just 250,000 yuan ($36,500) for the full-size, luxury electric SUV. At 5,263 mm long, 1,999 mm wide, and 1,790 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,130 mm, BYD’s Great Tang is slightly bigger than the Hyundai IONIQ 9 and Kia EV9.
The flagship electric SUV boasts “29 world firsts,” according to BYD, including a pure-electric range of up to 590 miles (950 km), its Flash Charging tech, and China’s first 2+2+3 seven-seat configuration.
BYD already builds nearly every vehicle component, from batteries to the powertrain and other drivetrain components. Now it’s expanding its software and smart-device offerings.
Last month, it revealed China’s first 4nm smart driving chip, unlocking “the highest level of vehicle intelligence” with L3 and L4 autonomous driving capabilities. What’s next?
