Selena Gomez recently clarified her comment under an Instagram post about Taylor Swift supporting the New York Knicks, who defeated the San Antonio Spurs during Game 4 of the NBA Finals on June 10. For those uninformed, Swift attended Game 4 at Madison Square Garden with Alana Haim, Este Haim, and Mariska Hargitay, where the Knicks secured a historic win to lead the best-of-seven game finals by 3-1.

Taylor Swift and her friends were spotted wearing T-shirts with celebrities’ names that sounded similar to “Knicks,” with the Bad Blood singer’s T-shirt saying “Stevie Knicks.” Swift was also seen celebrating the Knicks’ win, and she was not the only one, as Timothée Chalamet, Kylie Jenner, Ben Stiller, and Tracy Morgan also attended the game.

On June 10, MTV’s official Instagram account posted photos of Taylor Swift from Game 4. Selena Gomez, an avid San Antonio Spurs fan, raised eyebrows when she commented “lol” under the post featuring her long-term best friend, which instigated rumors that the Calm Down singer was allegedly shading Swift.

However, Gomez was quick to clarify her comment in an Instagram Story, insisting that she “would never insult my friends nor was it an insult.” She further wrote that her comment was regarding the first photo on the post, which featured Swift hugging Hargitay. Gomez also continued that she bet on the game with her friends and was poking fun at them after she lost, writing:

“woke up and was sent so many texts. I would never insult my friends nor was it an insult. The comment was a reaction to the first slide on the page. Second I bet my friends on the game. The friends in the text chain I posted. I lost but was poking at my opponents, my friends. Believe it or not I do have other friends in my life. But quickly forget that most assume otherwise. also .. It’s a basketball game.”

Selena Gomez commented on the “sudden fans” of the Knicks following Game 4

This is not the only time Selena Gomez posted about Game 4 between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden on June 10. The singer and actress, who is currently in London for the shooting of her series Only Murders in the Building, posted that she had woken up at 3 am to watch the game and support the Spurs.

In a follow-up Instagram Story, she shared her reaction to the Knicks beating the Spurs 107-106. According to Page Six, Selena Gomez wrote that her “heart breaks just a lil” for the Spurs’ loss, adding, “It’s ok. I’m happy for the teams! Thank you for giving us some great games @nba.”

In another Story, Gomez wrote that she had “mad respect” for the game and congratulated Knicks fans. However, her post included a subtle jab at “sudden fans,” as she continued:

“Mad respect for the game!! Congrats to the peeps that represent! Whaat a comeback. so funny how some are all the sudden fans though lol.”

It is unclear who Selena Gomez was referring to as “sudden fans” as of this article.

The New York Knicks will face off against the San Antonio Spurs for Game 5 on June 13, 2026. The game will be held at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas.
