Denver Broncos edge rusher Jonathon Cooper found himself engulfed in legal trouble on Thursday night after a domestic dispute with his girlfriend escalated into an arrest. Both Cooper and the girlfriend, whose relationship has been on and off, were taken into custody by police.

The controversy has gained traction since it became public knowledge, with many anticipating further details. A newly released police affidavit, shared on social media by TMZ Sports executive producer Michael J. Babcock, sheds light on the incident leading to the arrest.

“Jonathon Cooper’s arrest started with an argument over alleged cheating with his girlfriend. Below is the probable cause affidavit,” Babcock wrote on X. “Long story short, a 28-year-old woman who’d been seeing the LB for years admitted to confronting him over alleged infidelity.

“She told cops she took his phone and threw it against the wall. She got the phone back, and there was eventually a struggle for the device. He got his phone back. Cooper admitted he told the woman he would break her phone if she didn’t leave his place.”

“She didn’t, and that’s exactly what he said he did, telling cops he bit the iPhone 17, cracking the screen. Like Cooper, the woman was also arrested for domestic violence and criminal mischief. Curious how this is received — reading the arrest affidavit (see below), the woman clearly seemed to be the aggressor.”

Following the arrest of Jonathon Cooper, the Broncos issued a brief statement acknowledging the situation and noting that they are gathering more information while cooperating with authorities. Under its personal conduct policy, the NFL is also monitoring the development.

Update: Jonathon Cooper has been released from police custody

Jonathon Cooper has finally regained freedom following the incident that led to his arrest and that of his girlfriend. Mike Klis detailed the incident that occurred before the Broncos linebacker was eventually released by the police on the “Dover and Cecil” show on Friday morning.

“He’s been released,” Klis said while reporting on the show via phone call. “They had a hearing. He’s represented by Harvey Steinberg. Had a hearing at 9:45 this morning in the Douglas County courtroom, and he was released on a personal recognizance bond.”

Cooper was a key contributor to the solid Broncos’ defense last season, recording 50 tackles, eight tackles for loss, 16 quarterback hits, four passes defended and eight sacks. He’s become a reliable pass rusher and run defender, making the off-field situation particularly concerning for the franchise.
