Adani Green Energy on Tuesday commissioned a 3.37 Gigawatt-hour (GWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Gujarat’s Khavda, a site that is emerging as one of the largest renewable energy hubs, amid India’s push to build infrastructure needed for large-scale integration of clean power as it works toward its net zero emissions target of 2070.

The Khavda complex is already among the largest renewable energy developments, where Adani Green Energy first operationalised 1,000 MW of solar capacity in March 2024 within 12 months of commencing work at the site. The broader project is part of a 30 GW renewable energy build-out spanning 538 sq km in Gujarat.

The newly commissioned BESS takes AGEL’s total operational battery storage capacity at Khavda to 3.37 GWh, including 1.37 GWh added in March 2026. The project was executed within 10 months of construction commencement, making it one of the faster utility-scale storage deployments globally, it said.

The company said the system can store enough energy to power nearly one million homes for a day or meet peak electricity demand equivalent to cities such as Indore, Chandigarh, or Goa.

AGEL has also guided for over 10 GWh of additional battery storage capacity in FY27 and plans to scale total storage capacity to 50 GWh over the next five years.

The Khavda site remains central to the company’s renewable energy expansion strategy, with 9.9 GW already operational as part of the larger 30 GW project.
