Carson Hocevar has recalled an interaction between his late grandmother and Kyle Busch. The Spire Motorsports driver shared how his grandmother got Busch to sign a hero card of his when he was competing in Late Model Racing.

Hocevar and Busch have been Spire teammates in the Truck Series. The two have had multiple run-ins in the Cup Series, but their Truck race at Echopark Speedway marked a change in their relationship.

Hocevar pushed Busch and helped him nab his ninth win at Atlanta. The two-time Cup champion credited Hocevar for being his wingman and keeping pace to win the race. They even had an iconic high-five midway through a burnout.

The No.77 driver has now taken to X to pay tribute to Busch. He shared an image of his grandmother getting an autograph from Busch, writing,

“This is my grandma, we lost her a little over a year ago. she was my number one fan and didn’t care who you were. you were gonna know it, and Kyle Busch was no exception. While he raced at Kalamazoo Speedway and did an autograph session the same year I started late model racing. My grandma took the opportunity to give him a hero card of mine to sign so she can mention her grandson races.”

Hocevar noted that he ran Busch into the fence at the same track the following year. Busch brought up the incident after Hocevar made it into the Cup Series.

“We don’t know what goes on up there, but I would have to imagine that if my grandma saw him, she would go find him just talk about her grandson and knowing how Kyle reacted then, he would have responded with a smile. This picture is heavy to me and I hope somewhere at grandma’s house that hero card is still there and I find it one day,” he added.

The Cup Series field has decided to run a special decal in honour of Kyle Busch at Charlotte. All 39 cars will sport a signed version of the No.8.

Kyle Busch’s cause of death released in a family statement

Kyle Busch was hospitalised on Thursday, May 21, due to a sudden onset of a severe illness. The 41-year-old passed away the same day, leaving the NASCAR world searching for answers about the cause.

A leaked 911 call revealed that Busch experienced shortness of breath and coughed up blood. A statement released by his family has provided further clarity.

“The medical evaluation provided to the Busch Family concluded that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications.”

Notably, Kyle Busch complained of flu-like symptoms during Watkins Glen. He went over the radio requested a doctor be ready with a shot. The Las Vegas native looked fine when he won the Truck race at Dover last weekend.

The fatal moment happened when he collaped in the sim at General Motors Technical Center in Charlotte.
