Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and the rest of the squad have been handed a massive fine after the franchise were found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate for the second time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. The skipper has been fined ₹24 lakh for the offence, while the rest of the team are set to be fined either ₹6 lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.

Featuring in their final league stage match against the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, on Thursday, May 21, CSK failed to begin their 20th over within the cut-off time as the hosts slammed a massive 229-4, after being put into bat first.

CSK faced an on-field penalty for the same, as they had to field an extra fielder inside the circle for the final over bowled by Mukesh Choudhary. The left-arm pacer conceded 13 runs off the final over, before picking up Washington Sundar’s wicket off the last ball of the innings.

“Ruturaj Gaikwad, Captain, Chennai Super Kings, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 66 of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad,” a statement on iplt20.com read.

“As this was his team’s second offence (first offence in Match 18) of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Gaikwad was fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser,” the statement continued.

CSK were found guilty of maintaining a slow over rate for the first time in IPL 2026 during the match against the Delhi Capitals (DC) at home on April 11. Ruturaj Gaikwad is the second captain to be fined twice for a slow over rate this season after Punjab Kings’ Shreyas Iyer.

CSK crash out of IPL 2026 Playoffs race after third loss in a row to end their league stage

Coming into their last league stage match, CSK had a remote chance of making it into the top four. However, all of the last remaining hopes were dashed soon as GT posted a mammoth score on the board, and the visitors responded by being bowled out for 140 with more than six overs to spare.

CSK end their campaign with 12 points from 14 matches, and fail to qualify for the playoffs for a third season in a row.
