Gunther entered Night of Champions 2026 looking like one of the favorites to leave Riyadh with the Undisputed WWE Championship. The Ring General had already established himself as one of the company’s most dominant forces and had repeatedly proven he belonged in the world title picture.
However, despite another outstanding performance in the Triple Threat Match against Cody Rhodes and Sami Zayn, Gunther came up short as Zayn scored the biggest victory of his career by pinning Rhodes to become the new champion.
Thanks for the submission!
While some fans may have felt this was the perfect time to give The Ring General another world championship reign, WWE appeared to have other priorities in mind. The Austrian powerhouse remains one of WWE’s most protected stars. However, the creative team may have decided that delaying his coronation served the bigger picture heading into SummerSlam.
That said, this article looks at three possible reasons Gunther did not win the Undisputed WWE Championship at Night of Champions.
#3 Sami Zayn’s story simply carried more emotional weight
WWE has always thrived on emotional storytelling. Sami Zayn‘s journey was arguably one of the most compelling narratives in the company heading into Night of Champions.
For years, Zayn had fallen short whenever he reached the biggest stage. Whether it was Roman Reigns, missed opportunities, or heartbreaking near-victories, the Underdog from the Underground had repeatedly come within touching distance of the company’s top prize. Night of Champions finally gave Zayn and his fans a long-awaited payoff.
Rather than giving Gunther another championship reign, Triple H rewarded one of the company’s longest-running redemption stories. Sami pinned Cody Rhodes to capture his first Undisputed WWE Championship. That created one of the most memorable WWE moments of 2026.
From a storytelling perspective, Sami Zayn’s victory could be seen as offering a stronger emotional payoff than another dominant Gunther title reign. WWE thrives on moments that fans remember forever. Sami’s celebration fit that category.
Meanwhile, The Ring General loses very little in defeat because he was never pinned and remained one of the strongest performers in the match.
#2 Gunther doesn’t need the championship to remain a main-event attraction
Unlike many Superstars, Gunther has arguably reached a point where championships enhance him rather than define him.
The Ring General’s legendary Intercontinental Championship reign transformed him into one of WWE’s most respected competitors. Meanwhile, his World Heavyweight Championship run further cemented him as a legitimate main-event star. By the time Night of Champions arrived, fans already viewed The Ring General as one of the most dangerous men on the roster, regardless of whether he held gold.
WWE has consistently presented Gunther as an unstoppable force who rarely loses cleanly. Even in Riyadh, he controlled key stretches of the Triple Threat Match and looked capable of winning before Sami capitalized on the chaos.
Because of that credibility, WWE can comfortably keep The Ring General in the championship picture without immediately placing the title on him. Instead of rushing another reign, Triple H can continue presenting him as an elite threat who is only one victory away from reclaiming the top prize.
That level of consistency has become one of WWE’s biggest strengths under the current creative regime. Sometimes protecting a superstar’s aura is more valuable than immediately rewarding them with another championship.
#1 Triple H is saving Gunther’s next World Title victory for an even bigger stage
If Gunther eventually becomes Undisputed WWE Champion, Triple H may want the moment to happen under different circumstances.
Night of Champions revolved around three major stories entering the main event: Cody Rhodes trying to continue his reign, Sami Zayn chasing his lifelong dream, and Gunther seeking another world championship. Had The Ring General won, the result would have felt like another major win for an already established main-event star.
Instead, WWE created an unforgettable feel-good moment while keeping Gunther positioned for future blockbuster programs. Looking ahead, there are numerous possibilities.
Oba Femi captured the 2026 King of the Ring tournament and earned a future world championship opportunity. Meanwhile, Cody Rhodes could pursue a rematch after losing the title. Gunther could also demand another opportunity since he was not pinned in Riyadh.
That leaves Triple H with several options heading into SummerSlam. Whether the company chooses Sami Zayn vs. The Ring General or an even bigger multi-man championship match, The Career Killer remains one of the central figures in the Undisputed WWE Championship picture.
More importantly, delaying a potential Gunther victory could make it feel even more significant. He has already proven he can dominate opponents for months at a time. His next championship reign doesn’t need to begin immediately. Perhaps it simply needs to begin at the right moment.
Given Triple H’s long-term approach to storytelling, it’s entirely possible that Night of Champions wasn’t the end of The Ring General’s pursuit of the Undisputed WWE Championship. Instead, it may have been the chapter that sets up an even bigger payoff later in 2026. That could be the stage for The Ring General to reach the top of the division again.
