Scientists just found a hidden weakness in forever chemicals
PFAS, widely known as “forever chemicals,” are among the most stubborn pollutants scientists face today. Because these compounds are extraordinarily stable, they can remain in water supplies, ecosystems, and even the human body for decades. Their persistence has made PFAS contamination a growing environmental and public health concern around the world. Now, researchers have uncovered an important clue that could help improve efforts to eliminate these chemicals. New Clue in the Fight Against PFAS Pollution A new study shows that PFAS can be broken down using intense light without the need for added chemicals. More importantly, the researchers identified the…
Primed to treat: On Kerala and Nipah
The emergence of a case of the Nipah virus in Kerala and the subsequent control in the State is indicative of two things: first, Kerala’s own mix of ecological factors and anthropogenic activity that makes it vulnerable every monsoon season to the possibility of Nipah spreading, the hosts being fruit bats. Second, the fact that there has been just a single case so far is testament to the robustness of the health systems in place in Kerala. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified Nipah a priority pathogen, accounting for its lethality, potential to cause outbreaks, even a pandemic. It…

The Complete Calvin and Hobbes is a great last-minute Father’s Day gift
Father’s Day is nearly here. Hopefully, you already got a gift for dads you care about, but if not, here’s a quick, easy recommendation for anyone who enjoys a good comic strip. The Complete Calvin and Hobbes contains every one of Bill Watterson’s beloved strips made during the comic’s ten-year run from 1985 through 1995, packed in three deluxe hardcover books, for $89.48 at Amazon when you check the on-page coupon. The set originally sold for $225, but it’s often available for around $130. This is the best price I’ve seen it sell for.The lighthearted, kid-friendly comics couldn’t be more…
A security researcher said she was able to access several internal FIFA platforms due to a simple security flaw, which allowed her to watch and have full control of the TV stream of every World Cup game. The researcher, who goes by BobDaHacker, said she simply registered as a player agent on FIFA’s official agent registration platform. Then, thanks to having that account and a flaw in FIFA’s back-end API, which didn’t check if a user actually had the proper authorization, she was able to access several internal FIFA platforms. This included the system that allows broadcasters to control what…
SC’s ₹30,000 homemaker benchmark may lift accident compensation payouts
Mumbai: A recent Supreme Court ruling pegging the economic value of unpaid household work at a notional ₹30,000 per month is expected to increase compensation payouts in motor accident claims and force insurers to reassess their third-party claim reserves, industry executives said. The top court judgment could have implications for compensation awarded in motor accident death and injury cases, where tribunals calculate losses based on the victim’s income and future earning potential. If courts begin using ₹30,000 instead of the ₹15,000-20,000 monthly income often assumed for homemakers, compensation awards could rise substantially, increasing third-party claim payouts and insurers’ outstanding liabilities. Also Read:…
