4 min readNew DelhiApr 22, 2026 09:00 PM IST Heartbreak is often described as an emotional experience, but its effects can extend far beyond feelings. Sleep, in particular, is one of the first areas to be affected when the mind is under stress. Actor Kalki Koechlin recently spoke about going through such a phase on a podcast with Soha Ali Khan, describing how heartbreak led to months of insomnia and left her struggling to feel grounded. “I did have a series of months of insomnia from heartbreak, and it really made me realise how psychological it all is,” she said,…
Scientists just unlocked a cheaper way to make clean hydrogen fuel
Renewable energy sources can cut harmful emissions, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and improve efficiency. However, many clean energy technologies remain expensive because they depend on costly materials such as platinum group metals (PGM) and require efficient ways to store energy for later use. Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis are working on a possible solution. A team led by Gang Wu, professor of energy, environmental & chemical engineering in the McKelvey School of Engineering, has developed a new catalyst designed for an anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE). This technology uses electricity from renewable sources to split water into…

The explosive growth of electric vehicles has intensified the search for ways to make electric motors more energy efficient. One major challenge is iron loss, also called magnetic hysteresis loss, which occurs when magnetic fields inside the motor repeatedly reverse direction. This process wastes energy as heat within the motor core, which is made from soft magnetic materials. Because electric motors often operate at high temperatures, thermal effects can also partially demagnetize these materials, making the energy loss problem even more complicated. A key factor behind these effects is the behavior of magnetic domains, which are tiny magnetic regions inside…
From queues to QR codes: A state in India may have found the fix for India’s fertiliser distribution woes
The distribution of fertiliser across states in India has long been plagued by shortages, panic buying, diversion allegations, and chaotic scenes outside cooperative societies, with Madhya Pradesh (MP), one of the country’s key agri-producing states, no exception. During the previous kharif season, crowd control emerged as a major challenge at several distribution centres. Against this backdrop, the state rolled out the AgriStack-linked e-Vikas portal statewide from April 1.While the MP government projects it as a major reform to streamline fertiliser distribution in the state, industry stakeholders say it is a promising initiative but too early to evaluate, while others argue…

‘Everything already written, everything already said,” – the words Blixa Bargeld chose to open Rampen, the latest Einstürzende Neubauten record, released in 2024 to comparatively little fanfare, felt ominous. Would this mark the end of the band that has defined German music, at least to the outside world, for close to five decades?“No!” Bargeld replies, his voice thundering across the small dressing room backstage at the National Theatre of the Netherlands in The Hague. “Take it for granted – we’ll make another record.” Later that night, Einstürzende Neubauten (“Collapsing New Buildings”) are the closing act of the Rewire festival’s 15th…
