Mumbai: Counterfeit currency detection in India’s banking system rose 5.7% to 2,29,746 pieces in 2025-26 from 2,17,396 pieces in the previous year, with fake Rs 500 notes, the most widely circulated denomination in the country, surging 20.5% to 1,41,907 pieces, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s annual report.The Rs 500 note has now become the dominant target for counterfeiters, accounting for 61.8% of all fake notes detected in the banking system in FY26, up from 54.2% in FY25 and 38.5% in FY24, a sharp and consistent rise that points to increasing sophistication in the production of fake high-value currency.…
