When the KCET 2026 results came out on June 6, Srajan B S was occupied with some other work. He had no idea that he had just become one of Karnataka’s top engineering rankers. His mother found out first.“She told me, ‘You got second rank. I myself was shocked,” says Srajan, 18, who secured Common Rank List 4,630 and a category rank of 548 in JEE Advanced 2026, and is now Karnataka’s KCET engineering state second topper. “Like a bit, I thought she was pranking me, but later, I realised that she was not pranking me.”In a conversation with indianexpress.com,…
I resisted smart telescopes for years — then one changed my life
When I go in search of dark skies, I like to travel light. Backpack light. With a full-frame camera, a tripod and some binoculars on my back, I can get everything I want from the night sky, save for the close-up views that only a telescope could bring. A telescope is such a burden when traveling. It’s heavy and delicate, making any trip feel like a driving tour where you’re never more than a few feet from your vehicle. No thanks — astrotourism for me is about exploring.I stuck to my “no telescope” rule for years, right up until a…
A New DC ‘Museum’ Raises Awareness About the Looming Consequences of Extreme Weather
If you knew a major storm or fire was heading toward your home, what would you save? Maybe your pet? A box of letters? The blanket that your grandma knitted for you as a baby? A pop-up exhibit led by the Climate Action Campaign and curated by Sam Hartman, an artist and survivor of Hurricane Helene, asks that question of visitors. Built in a shipping container-sized space, the exhibit at Constitution Gardens on the National Mall brings together artifacts and stories from survivors of extreme weather events across the country to the political heart of the country. “You can look…

The young southpaw had stepped in as a replacement after Shubman Gill’s injury…
Stressed out, weak bones: the hidden impact of chronic stress on your skeletal health
When you are stressed, your body produces less new bone, while old bone breaks down faster than it can be replaced. India’s rising export champion faces a critical credibility test
Just when India’s seafood industry appeared to have cracked the code for sustained export growth, a new challenge has surfaced from an unexpected quarter. Over the past year, the sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience, overcoming punishing US tariffs, diversifying into new markets and posting record export earnings. The government is now openly talking about taking seafood exports to $30 billion within five years, a 2.5 times growth. Yet, as exports gather momentum, rising rejection rates linked to banned antibiotic residues in shrimp threaten to undermine the very international trust that helped fuel the industry’s recovery. This situation highlights that expanding…

Aviation industry looks skywards as leaders fly in for Rio summit | Airline industry
Nothing says jet fuel crisis, as one prospective attender put it, like flying everyone to Rio de Janeiro. Aviation leaders will converge in Brazil this weekend for the Iata AGM, the annual global airline summit, with the industry still, for the most part, looking resolutely skyward. The oil tankers may still be stuck behind the strait of Hormuz as the conflict between the US, Israel and Iran flickers on, but for now, airlines continue to defy dire warnings of impending shortages which had stoked fears of a summer of chaos for European holidaymakers. If the AGM acts as a barometer of the…
