Why does the Googlebook exist?
Google announced its new Googlebook laptop platform yesterday, and so far I’ve been left asking, “Why?” Why is Google blowing up its Chromebook and ChromeOS platform for this?I’ve been excited by the prospect of Android and ChromeOS unifying under the long-rumored Aluminium OS. The theory was that Aluminium might unite Android and ChromeOS under one house, simultaneously turning Android phones into portable Chromebook desktops, fixing the mess that is Android tablets, and broadening the scope of actual Chromebook laptops.Instead, we’ve got the Googlebook; an awkwardly named line of laptops with no hardware details (aside from a glowing light bar and…
GDP data release revised to June 7 each year
New Delhi: The statistics ministry has revised the release schedule for provisional GDP estimates and fourth quarter GDP data to June 7 of each year, or the previous working day in case of a holiday, from the last working day of May. The change followed consultations with the Advisory Committee on National Accounts Statistics (ACNAS), as several datasets become available only after a delay of up to two months. As a result, the provisional GDP estimates for FY26 and Q4FY26 are scheduled to be released on June 5. According to the ministry, listed companies are required to file audited fourth…

Wild Blueberry Farms Across Maine Suffer as Climate Change Upends Growing Seasons
Last summer, the wild blueberry fields at Crystal Spring Farm turned red too soon. Severe drought had gripped most of the state of Maine. At his farm near the town of Brunswick, Seth Kroeck knew the leaves were changing color prematurely because the blueberry plants were stressed. Berries shriveled before they could ripen. The farm’s 2025 harvest was almost a total loss. “We got about 7 percent of our expected harvest,” Kroeck, 55, said. Standing in his blueberry fields in April, he pointed out the new growth, still only a few inches high, and commented that last year’s yield was…

The Universe’s biggest black holes may be forged in violent mergers
Scientists studying gravitational waves believe they may have uncovered how the Universe creates its biggest black holes. Instead of forming directly from collapsing stars, these enormous objects appear to grow through repeated black hole collisions inside extremely crowded star clusters. The new research, led by Cardiff University, examined version 4.0 of LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA’s Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC4), which contains 153 reliable detections of merging black holes. Researchers focused on whether the largest black holes in the catalog could be “second-generation” objects. In this scenario, black holes formed from dying stars collide with each other, then merge again in dense stellar environments…

Poppy debuts a proactive AI assistant to help organize your digital life
Smartphones can be distracting with their dizzying array of apps and constant stream of notifications. A new app called Poppy aims to organize the chaos by combining your calendar, email, messages and other sources into a single dashboard. The idea, per the company’s website, is that “Poppy pays attention so you don’t have to.” Users can connect various services to Poppy’s app, like their email, calendar, and, at a minimum, their location. Poppy then uses that data along with AI to guess what’s important to you right now based on what’s going on in your life. At a high level,…
AI learns to decode the diseases written in your DNA
Scientists at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have created a new artificial intelligence system that can do more than flag harmful genetic mutations. The tool can also forecast the types of diseases those mutations are most likely to cause. The approach, known as V2P (Variant to Phenotype), is intended to speed up genetic testing and support the development of new therapies for rare and complex illnesses. The research was published in the December 15 online issue of Nature Communications. Predicting disease from genetic variation Most existing genetic analysis tools are able to estimate whether a mutation is…
