Why CEA Anantha Nageswaran says India is facing a ‘Live Balance of Payments Stress Test’
India is facing one of its toughest external-sector challenges in years as rising oil prices, foreign investor exits, a weakening rupee, and slowing capital inflows put pressure on the country’s economy. Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) V. Anantha Nageswaran described the situation as a “live balance of payments stress test,” warning that India’s ability to manage imports, currency stability, and foreign exchange flows is now under real-time scrutiny. The Balance of Payments (BoP) is essentially a record of all financial transactions between India and the rest of the world. It tracks how much money flows into the country through exports, foreign investments,…
Germany urged to stop admiring Beijing and wake up to ‘China Shock 2.0’ | International trade
Germany must stop admiring China’s success in the EU or it will sleepwalk into the kind of deindustrialisation the US experienced 25 years ago, a leading Brussels thinktank has said. With China’s surplus with Germany having doubled between 2024 and 2025 from $12bn (£9bn) to $25bn, creating a $94bn trade imbalance, the Centre for European Reform (CER) said Europe’s largest economy risked a repeat of what happened in the US in 2001 when a sudden surge in imports permanently hollowed out towns in the American midwest.“China Shock 1.0” not only led to losses of up to 2.5m jobs but was also…
NATO eastern deterrence strategy takes shape around ‘autonomous zone’
RIGA, Latvia — NATO’s plans to strengthen deterrence along its eastern flank envision an “autonomous zone” where only unmanned systems operate, with linked sensors, drones and long-range fires to detect and target invading Russian forces at the start of a conflict, alliance officials said on the sidelines of military exercises in Latvia last week.Latvian troops tried out unmanned ground vehicles during the Crystal Arrow exercise as part of operational testing to integrate new technology into NATO’s Eastern Flank Deterrence Initiative, inspired by lessons from Ukraine, said Brig. Gen. Chris Gent, deputy chief of staff transformation and integration at NATO Allied…

T. rex’s tiny arms may have evolved for a surprisingly brutal reason
The famously tiny arms of Tyrannosaurus rex may have been the result of a major shift in how giant meat eating dinosaurs hunted, according to a new study led by researchers from UCL (University College London) and the University of Cambridge. The research, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, examined 82 species of theropods, a group of mostly carnivorous, two legged dinosaurs. The scientists found that reduced forelimbs evolved independently in at least five dinosaur lineages, including tyrannosaurids, the group that included T. rex. Rather than simply being a side effect of growing larger bodies, the study suggests…
