At the Venice Biennale I saw anger at Russia and Israel – and its leadership pretending everything was fine | Charlotte Higgins
On Tuesday, the Russian pavilion at the Venice Biennale was full of activity. Several pallets, piled high with cases of prosecco and a few boxes of good old English Gordon’s gin, had been delivered outside. Inside, Ensemble Toloka, a group of “young folk performers and professional researchers of Russian authentic music”, were singing, balalaikas at their feet, the first in a programme of performances staged for the preview days of the art festival. When I sent a few seconds of footage of this to a friend, a close and critical observer of Russia who lived there until recently, the reply came…
CBI takes over Suvendu ex-aide murder probe | India News
NEW DELHI: CBI has filed an FIR and taken over the investigation into the murder of Chandranath Rath, former personal assistant to West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari, reports Rajshekhar Jha. The agency has formed a seven-member SIT, headed by a DIG-rank officer, to probe the case. A meeting was held at the CBI headquarters in Delhi on Tuesday to review developments. The team has sought the remand of arrested suspects. According to an office order issued to form the SIT, the move follows the registration of a case by CBI Anti-Corruption Branch in Kolkata. The SIT is led by DIG…

Uranus and Neptune could be full of rocks, new study suggests
Could Uranus and Neptune be full of rocks? One new study thinks so.Uranus and Neptune are two planets that have historically been classified and thought of as “ice giants,” orbiting far out in the freezing edges of our solar system. But it’s possible that our understanding of these planets’ makeup could be totally off, and their atmospheres could be full of rocks, researchers suggest in a new study.”We found out that both Uranus and Neptune have their outer shells made mostly of rocks (and hydrogen and helium gas),” study author Yamila Miguel of the Netherlands Institute for Space Research told…
Kia Is Ready To Build An Electric Successor To The Stinger. One Thing Is Holding It Back.
Kia says that it would like to build a spiritual successor to the Stinger. The biggest thing holding it back? The cost of an electric performance sedan. Never say never, though. Kia’s design boss isn’t ruling anything out if EVs continue to become more popular. There was a time not too long ago when the Kia was doing what almost no other automaker dared to. The growing South Korean automaker built a rear-wheel-drive enthusiast car with a twin-turbocharged V-6 after nearly every other mainstream brand had abandoned the sports sedan segment. It had real power and proportions that made even…
California bets on sodium-ion batteries for extreme heat regions
Juniper Energy California Site. Photo: Juniper Energy California renewable energy developer Juniper Energy has partnered with Alsym Energy to deploy 500 MWh of sodium-ion battery storage projects across California. The partnership will use Alsym’s sodium-ion battery technology in battery energy storage systems (BESS), including projects planned for the Mojave Desert and other high-temperature regions. The companies say the goal is to build storage projects that can better handle extreme heat without the cooling systems typically needed for lithium-ion batteries. Built for California heat Alsym says its Na-Series batteries are designed to avoid thermal runaway – the chain reaction that can…
Physicists discover quantum particles that break the rules of reality
Physicists have traditionally sorted all elementary particles in our three-dimensional universe into two categories: bosons and fermions. Bosons mostly include particles that carry forces, such as photons, while fermions make up ordinary matter, including electrons, protons, and neutrons. That simple division starts to break down in lower dimensional systems. Since the 1970s, scientists have predicted the existence of a third type of particle known as an anyon, which falls somewhere between a boson and a fermion. In 2020, researchers experimentally observed these unusual particles at the boundary of supercooled, strongly magnetized, one-atom thick (that is, two-dimensional) semiconductors. Now, scientists from…

Musk mulled handing OpenAI to his children, Altman testifies
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman finally took the stand this morning to defend himself against his former cofounder Elon Musk’s lawsuit challenging OpenAI’s corporate structure. Altman was asked out of the gate what he thought of Musk’s allegation that OpenAI’s other founders “stole a charity” when they launched a for-profit subsidiary to market products based on the company’s AI models. “It feels difficult to even wrap my head around that framing,” Altman said after several seconds of silence. “We created one of the largest charities in the world. This foundation is doing incredible work and will do much more.” Musk’s attorneys…
NASA’s Perseverance rover completes the first AI-planned drive on Mars
The team behind NASA’s six-wheeled Mars explorer tested a vision-enabled artificial intelligence system to map a safe route across the Martian surface without relying on human route planners. NASA’s Perseverance rover has now completed the first drives on another planet that were planned by artificial intelligence. The milestone demonstration took place on Dec. 8 and 10 and was led by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. During the test, generative AI was used to select waypoints for the rover, a complex planning task that is normally handled by human experts on Earth. “This demonstration shows how far our capabilities…
