A new study highlights concerns about TikTok mental health advice, raising questions about the accuracy, safety and impact of viral wellness content.

TikTok Mental Health Advice: What Are You Really Seeing?

Recent research is raising concerns about the reliability of mental health advice on TikTok. A 2025 analysis done by The Guardian journalists found that more than half of the 100 most popular #mentalhealthtips videos contained misinformation, highlighting potential risks for young viewers.
A new University of Birmingham study published in August 2026 further suggests that TikTok’s design may make it harder for young people to critically evaluate mental health content they encounter. (1✔ ✔Trusted Source

TikTok Mental Health Advice: New Study Reveals Hidden Risks

TikTok has become a popular destination for young people seeking mental health advice, but a new study suggests that relatable content may not always be reliable.

Researchers say the platform’s fast-moving design can make it difficult for young users to distinguish genuine expertise from personal opinion.

A video that feels relatable can be convincing without necessarily being medically accurate.

What Did the New Birmingham Study Find?

The study, “Media literacies, platform imaginaries and mental health influencers: How young people respond to mental health content on TikTok,” was conducted by Professor Ruth Page and Dr Alex Christiansen at the University of Birmingham and published in Digital Health in August 2026.

Researchers explored how young people judge the credibility of TikTok mental health content.

The research involved 86 participants aged 16-25, including 73 people who took part in 18 group discussions and 13 people interviewed individually. Participants were recruited from schools and colleges across England.

The study found that young people often considered relatability, authenticity, follower numbers and comments when deciding whether a creator was trustworthy. However, many were less confident about checking professional qualifications or verifying health claims.

Being relatable can win attention, but expertise matters when health is involved.

When Personal Stories Start Looking Like Medical Advice

TikTok’s strength is its personal nature. Someone describing anxiety, depression or another mental health experience may make viewers feel understood.

But personal experience and professional expertise are different things.

The Birmingham researchers found that participants were aware that some TikTok information could be unreliable.

Yet the platform’s rapid stream of content could make careful evaluation difficult. Participants described TikTok as “fun but fake,” highlighting the tension between entertainment and trustworthy information.

    Earlier Research Also Raises Concerns

A 2025 Guardian investigation examined the 100 most-viewed TikTok videos under #mentalhealthtips. Mental health professionals assessed the content and found that 52% contained misinformation, including unsupported treatments and oversimplified claims.

This was a journalistic investigation with expert assessment, rather than a conventional peer-reviewed study.

Another 2025 systematic review, “Exploring Problematic TikTok Use and Mental Health Issues,” examined 26 studies involving 11,462 participants.

It found an association between problematic TikTok use and symptoms of anxiety and depression, particularly among younger users. Importantly, the findings do not prove that TikTok causes these conditions.

The Bigger Risk May Be How the Feed Works

The new Birmingham research offers a different perspective: the problem may not simply be misinformation, but how TikTok’s algorithm influences what users repeatedly see.

Young people reported that recommendations could sometimes feel unpredictable, while engagement signals such as likes and comments could influence perceptions of credibility.

This points to the importance of digital media literacy. Young users need to understand how algorithms work, how to verify a creator’s credentials and how personal experience differs from evidence-based healthcare information.

Think before you trust, especially when the advice concerns your health.

How to Spot Risky Mental Health Advice?

Before following a viral mental health tip, ask:

    • Is the creator a qualified professional?
    • Is the claim supported by reliable research?
    • Is it personal experience or medical advice?
    • Does it encourage self-diagnosis?
    • Can the information be confirmed through a trusted health source?

TikTok can help people find support and feel less alone, but it should not replace professional assessment or treatment. Ensure you consult a professional and get advice at the earliest

Your for you page is not your Doctor

The latest research does not mean every TikTok mental health video is harmful. It shows why users need better tools to separate useful information from misleading advice.

After all, your algorithm may know what videos you like; but it does not have a psychology degree.
