Tesla to inaugurate new Semi factory in Nevada next month

Tesla says it will officially inaugurate its new Semi factory in Nevada next month, marking the grand opening of the plant it has designed to build 50,000 electric trucks a year.

The company announced the event through its Tesla Semi account, though the milestone comes roughly five months after Tesla already claimed that the factory started volume production of the truck.

A grand opening after production already started

“Inauguration of new Semi factory in Nevada next month,” the Tesla Semi account posted, with an image titled ‘Semi Rollout’ and a date: September 24th 2026.

Tesla built the dedicated facility next to Gigafactory Nevada in Sparks as part of a $3.6 billion expansion it announced in early 2023, and the first truck rolled off the high-volume production line back in April.

That means the “inauguration” is a ceremonial event rather than the start of manufacturing — Tesla has been producing vehicles and delivering to customers as part of test programs for months.

What the factory is built to do

The dedicated Semi plant spans 1.7 million square feet and is supposedly engineered for an annual capacity of 50,000 trucks. Tesla began hiring for the ramp in early 2025.

The key advantage of the site is vertical integration: Tesla has put most manufacturing into the same facility and takes advantage of the neighboring Gigafactory Nevada.

Production model specs are now locked in. Tesla is building two variants — a Standard Range version rated at 325 miles and a Long Range version rated at 500 miles. Both use an 800-kW three-motor powertrain producing more than 1,000 horsepower, and both support Tesla’s Megacharger, which the company says can restore roughly 70% of range in about 30 minutes.

The ramp is the real question

Reaching 50,000 units a year is a ceiling, not a run rate. Analysts currently estimate Tesla will deliver somewhere between 5,000 and 15,000 Semis in 2026 as the line scales, well short of the plant’s nameplate capacity. We have been reporting that those numbers are not realistic.

Tesla program director Dan Priestley confirmed production “is now ramping” after the April line launch.

    Electrek’s Take

An inauguration event five months after a factory starts shipping trucks is unusual, but it fits the Semi’s whole history: this is a program that Tesla first unveiled in 2017 with a 2019 production target, then delivered hand-built units to PepsiCo in 2022, before finally standing up real volume production this year. A ribbon-cutting is the least of the delays.

The more interesting signal is why Tesla wants a public moment now. A grand opening gives the company a stage to talk up the ramp, show off the line, and likely reset expectations on how many trucks it can actually deliver in 2026. It also lines up neatly with the Semi’s push into Europe next month at IAA — two events that together frame the truck as finally arriving at scale.

Hopefully, it will be an opportunity for Tesla to lay out the detailed economics of owning the Tesla Semi after a few years of test programs in the hands of actual customers.

There’s a real chance for the Tesla Semi’s total cost of ownership to truly disruptive.
