A brief recap of X-Men ’97 season 2 episode 8
After transforming into the Horseman of Death from Apocalypse, Gambit makes a triumphant return in the eighth episode of season two of X-Men ’97. X-Force finds Apocalypse’s remains beneath the Parthenon, leading the X-Men to assume he is dead. But as time goes on, Professor X learns that Apocalypse has implanted his mind inside Gambit’s.
In New Orleans, the depraved Gambit seizes control of the Assassins’ and Thieves’ Guilds and endeavors to imbue Rogue with immortality by means of the Heart of Candra. Xavier confronts Apocalypse by entering Gambit’s mind, and the X-Men interrupt the rite. To weaken Apocalypse’s hold, he enlists Rogue’s help in reaching the real Remy.
Although Gambit manages to stay alive, Beast affirms that his state is still unstable and that the thot of the apocalypse lingers in his memory.
Major events to expect from X-Men ’97 season 2 episode 9
- Gambit’s connection to Apocalypse remains unresolved. Although Xavier and Rogue restore Remy’s control over his actions, Apocalypse’s consciousness remains inside him. The finale therefore has to address whether Gambit can fully separate himself from the ancient mutant.
- Cable faces a conflict over Gambit’s fate. Cable considers Remy a continuing threat because Apocalypse remains connected to him. After Jean prevents Cable from killing Gambit, their disagreement remains unresolved and could affect how X-Force responds to the final crisis.
- Val Cooper introduces a new mission involving The Tower. Cooper approaches Cable with a tarot card marked “The Tower” and asks for his assistance in capturing someone. The episode does not identify the target, leaving the card and Cooper’s intentions as major unresolved elements.
- The X-Men must deal with Apocalypse beyond his physical body. The destruction or disappearance of Apocalypse’s physical form does not end his influence. His presence inside Gambit shifts the conflict from a physical battle into a struggle over Remy’s mind and identity.
- Rogue and Gambit’s relationship remains central to the finale. Rogue helps bring Remy back during the psychic confrontation, but Gambit’s condition prevents their reunion from reaching a clear resolution. His continued connection to Apocalypse places their relationship alongside the larger mutant threat.
