    WNBA Fans Point Out Inconsistencies in Angel Reese’s Storytelling About Dolls and Playing With Them

    Angel Reese became the first WNBA player ever to receive her own signature Barbie doll, with the Atlanta Dream celebrating the occasion with a “Barbie Night” on Monday. However, WNBA fans questioned Reese’s comments about playing with dolls when growing up, highlighting inconsistencies in her storytelling.

    During the “Barbie Night” celebrations, Reese claimed that she didn’t have Barbie dolls that resembled her when growing up.

    “Honestly, I didn’t have a lot of dolls because I didn’t have dolls that really looked like me much,” Reese said. “That’s why I kind of really wanted to make sure this was super intentional because, now that they have a doll that looks like you, and nails and hair.”

    However, Sports Patriot called out Reese’s claims on X (formerly Twitter), claiming there infact was dolls that resembled her way before she was born.

    “Angel Reese claiming she ‘never had Barbie dolls growing up because they didn’t look like her’ is a powerful story. It is also historically dishonest,” Sports Patriot wrote. “Christie, Barbie’s Black friend, entered Barbie’s world in 1968. The first official Black Barbie arrived in 1980. American Girl introduced Addy Walker in 1993.

    “And in 1998, four years before Reese was born, Mattel was already selling Black basketball-playing Barbie dolls in authentic NBA uniforms.”

    The inaccuracy in her storytelling quickly earned the attention of WNBA fans, who slammed Reese under Sports Patriot’s post.

    “Lying for no reason at all. People like that are dangerous to be around,” a fan wrote.

    While Reese came under fire for her differing takes, the forward still made history, becoming the first WNBA player to receive her own Barbie doll.

    Angel Reese shows love to Atlanta fans for showing up on “Barbie Night”

    Despite receiving backlash Tuesday over her comments about playing with dolls, Angel Reese still had plenty to celebrate with the release of her signature Barbie. The Atlanta Dream marked the occasion by hosting “Barbie Night” during Monday’s game against the Aces.

    During the celebration, fans at State Farm Arena held up Reese Barbie dolls in the stands, with the forward acknowledging the support after the game.

    “Even though we didn’t get the win, thank you to everyone who came out yesterday. 🥺💗,” Reese wrote. “Seeing an entire arena PINK for my very own Barbie was truly a dream come true.

    “Since I’ve been in ATL, y’all have shown me nothing but love, and I’m so thankful for it. Keep showing up & supporting this team. 💗 #GoDream.”

    While “Barbie Night” was a success, the Dream were unable to cap it off with a win, suffering their biggest loss of the season.
