Health authorities in Michigan have reported two deaths connected to the state’s ongoing cyclospora outbreak. Both individuals had significant underlying conditions and suffered intestinal illness and dehydration. More than 11,000 outbreak-linked cases and 193 hospitalisations have been reported in Michigan.

First US Deaths Linked To Michigan Cyclospora Outbreak

Can a parasitic infection usually considered rarely fatal become deadly?
Michigan has reported the first two US deaths linked to the current cyclosporiasis outbreak, drawing attention to the dangers of prolonged diarrhoea and dehydration.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said both individuals had significant underlying health conditions. They were also affected by intestinal illness and dehydration, which may have contributed to the severity of their condition.

The department said the deaths highlight the importance of identifying the outbreak source and preventing additional infections.

Michigan Cases and Hospitalizations Continue to Rise

Michigan has reported 11,234 outbreak-linked cases, a sharp increase from the 461 cases announced during an earlier update. Health authorities have also reported 193 hospitalizations connected to the outbreak.

Nationwide, the CDC had recorded 6,707 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis as of July 28. More than 11,500 additional suspected cases were still awaiting confirmation or further investigation.

Although cyclosporiasis is generally not considered life-threatening, severe diarrhea can lead to dehydration and serious complications, particularly among people with underlying health conditions.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source

    What Is Cyclosporiasis?

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis, a microscopic parasite. The parasite can contaminate food or water and infect people who consume it.

Cyclospora commonly causes watery diarrhea, which may occur frequently and sometimes involve explosive bowel movements. Outbreaks are more common during late spring and summer in the United States.(2✔ ✔Trusted Source

The infection can also cause nausea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Severe Diarrhea Can Lead to Dehydration

Cyclosporiasis may improve on its own in some people, but symptoms can last for a month or longer without treatment. Persistent diarrhea can make it difficult for patients to maintain adequate hydration.

Dehydration caused by repeated diarrheal episodes can result in severe illness. The Michigan deaths involved people with underlying conditions whose health may have been worsened by the infection and dehydration.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source

    Food Sources Remain Under Investigation

Federal authorities have identified lettuce from Mexico served at Taco Bell restaurants in five states as one source linked to the outbreak. Investigators continue to examine whether other food products or locations may also be involved.

A separate report said iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms had been recalled. Authorities have warned that some contaminated products may already have been eaten or removed from store shelves.

The investigation is continuing in collaboration with federal, state and local health agencies.

Outbreak Highlights the Importance Of Food Safety

The growing number of cases has increased concern about contaminated fresh produce and the difficulty of tracing foodborne infections across multiple locations.

Health officials continue to investigate the source of the outbreak while monitoring infections, hospitalizations and possible additional deaths. The CDC has said cyclosporiasis-related deaths are rare.

People With Persistent Symptoms Need Medical Attention

People who develop prolonged watery diarrhea, nausea or signs of dehydration may require medical evaluation. Symptoms can continue for several weeks, and severe fluid loss can become dangerous.

The current outbreak is a reminder that an infection usually considered uncommon or mild can lead to serious illness in vulnerable individuals when symptoms are severe or prolonged.
