Brittney Griner and Cherelle Griner are reportedly filing for a divorce after seven years of marriage. While the moment remains a sensitive time for the couple, Indiana Fever guard Sydney Colson found humor in the situation, delivering a hilarious reaction to the news online.
Colson reacted to Griner’s reported divorce in a post on Threads.
“I didn’t sleep with BG. Let me just say that now,” Colson joked.
The former WNBA champion’s remark added some humor to the situation while appearing to reference the recent controversy involving DiJonai Carrington and NaLyssa Smith. In July, Carrington had accused Smith of cheating with other WNBA players, making Colson’s joke a subtle nod to that ongoing storyline.
Although the Fever guard tried playing down the moment with humour, it remains a tough time for the couple, who tied the knot in 2019.
The pair had remained strong throughout this period, with Cherelle Griner even advocating for her partner’s release from Russia after Griner was taken into custody by Russian authorities in 2022.
Upon the center’s return, the couple welcomed their first child together and seemed to be entering a new chapter.
However, on Thursday, Griner reportedly filed for divorce at the Superior Court of Fulton County, Georgia. According to the court documents obtained by multiple sources, the couple decided to move on, citing that their marriage was “irretrievably broken” and had “no hope of reconciliation.”
The filing also states that the two are seeking joint custody of their son, Bash, and have been separated since July 24, 2026.
The reported divorce also comes during a difficult stretch for Griner professionally, as she is sidelined with a knee injury and could miss her fourth straight game for the Connecticut Sun on Sunday.
Is Brittney Griner playing against the Dallas Wings tonight?
Brittney Griner joined the Connecticut Sun this offseason after moving from the Atlanta Dream. However, her first season with the franchise has been hampered by injuries, with the veteran center already missing 13 games, including the Sun’s last three.
Despite that, there is hope Griner could return on Sunday against the Dallas Wings. According to ESPN’s injury report, the veteran has been upgraded to questionable for the matchup.
Still, her availability will likely be decided closer to tip-off, as the Sun are expected to be careful with her return rather than risk bringing her back too soon.
