Chelsea Green suffered a major setback just one night before WWE SummerSlam. The former Women’s United States Champion came up short in tag team action on SmackDown, handing her a disappointing loss ahead of one of the biggest matches of her career.

Tonight on WWE SmackDown, Chelsea Green teamed up with Tiffany Stratton to take on Michin and B-Fab. Green and Stratton controlled large portions of the contest. The Buff Barbie built momentum with a clothesline and a cartwheel Alabama Slam on Michin before connecting with a Swanton Bomb. However, Michin managed to kick out.

The Hot Mess was tagged into the match shortly afterward, but events quickly turned against her. With the referee distracted, Jade Cargill shoved Stratton into the steel ring steps outside, taking the champion out of the equation. Inside the ring, Michin battled back before B-Fab received the tag. Michin connected with a superkick on Green, allowing The Baddies to hit their double-team slam. B-Fab covered Green for the three-count, handing the former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion an unexpected defeat just one night before SummerSlam.

The result comes at a crucial time for Green as The Hot Mess is officially set to compete in the Interim WWE Women’s Championship Ladder Match at SummerSlam, where she will battle Jade Cargill, Charlotte Flair, and Tiffany Stratton and Giulia/Lash Legend for the vacant championship following Rhea Ripley’s injury.

The closing moments of tonight’s match also added another layer to the rivalry surrounding the ladder match. After the bout ended, Charlotte Flair made her way to the ring and immediately went after Jade Cargill. Green and Stratton also joined the post-match brawl, attacking Michin and B-Fab at ringside as tensions boiled over just days before The Biggest Party of the Summer.

While the loss does not affect Green’s place in the title match, it does hand her a setback heading into one of the most important opportunities of her WWE career. It remains to be seen who wins the Interim Women’s Championship.
