Reacting to the passage of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said the legislation focuses largely on punishment after a paper leak occurs while failing to address the systemic causes of the problem. Ranka questioned why the Bill did not include measures such as blacklisting vendors, digitising the examination process, strengthening cybersecurity, using blockchain technology, improving security at examination centres, and implementing end-to-end tracking of question papers. Reiterating the party’s stand, he said fast-track courts and stricter penalties alone would not stop paper leaks unless the structural weaknesses in the examination system were addressed.

Indians on ship stranded near Ukraine, embassy ‘closely monitoring’ situation
The Indian Embassy in Ukraine, on Wednesday (Jul 29), said that it was closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with all concerned to ensure the safety of Indian seafarers onboard MV AMIR1.
In a post on X, the embassy said that the security of the Indian nationals was its “highest priority”.
“A situation regarding MV AMIR1 with Indian seafarers onboard has been brought to our attention. We attach the highest priority to this and are in constant touch with all concerned to ensure safety and security of all Indians onboard,” the Embassy of India in Ukraine said.
Assam flood toll rises to 75
The death toll in the Assam floods has climbed to 75, with seven more fatalities reported from Sivasagar district alone on Tuesday — all due to drowning. Seven districts remain severely affected, with 3,32,639 people across 622 villages impacted and 45,341 hectares of crop area submerged. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a major relief package: families of the deceased will receive a combined Rs 9 lakh — Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia, with the post-mortem requirement waived, and an additional Rs 5 lakh from the CM Relief Fund. Over one lakh severely flood-affected families will receive Rs 15,000 in cash, and students in the worst-hit districts will receive book grants from August 1 ranging from Rs 1,000 for Higher Secondary students to Rs 5,000 for postgraduates.
