Volvo trademark reveals EX50 EV name: Here’s what we know

Is the EX50 the name of Volvo’s next electric vehicle? A new trademark was filed, and all signs point to it becoming a production model soon.

Volvo trademark reveals EX50 as potential EV name

After launching the EX60, Volvo’s longest-range, fastest-charging electric vehicle to date, will the EX50 be next?

Volvo filed a trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) under the name EX50 on July 14, 2026.

The filing doesn’t reveal much other than the name itself and that it will, in fact, be electric. While Volvo has yet to announce it publicly, the EX50 is expected to be the name of its upcoming EV.

During its second quarter earnings last week, Volvo said it was planning to reveal two new electric models at the end of summer. According to Automotive News, Volvo is developing the two new EVs for Europe, but they could also be sold in the US.

A source close to the matter told AN that the new models, rumored to be an electric sedan and wagon, could hit US showrooms as early as 2028.

The trademark was filed the same week. Both models are expected to be based on Volvo’s SPA3 platform that underpins the EX60.

With an 800-volt electrical architecture and cell-to-body design, the platform provides significantly faster charging, longer driving range, and more interior space. It’s also flexible enough to support various body types.

On Thursday, Volvo announced the 2027 Volvo EX60 had a longer driving range than expected, with an official EPA-estimated range of up to 330 miles.

Under WLTP conditions, the electric SUV can drive up to 503 miles (810 km), making it Volvo’s longest-range EV yet.

It can also charge faster than any of its models. The EX60 P10 AWD version can add 165 miles of range in 10 minutes with a peak charging rate of 370 kW. In the US, Volvo’s electric SUV has a native NACS port.

The EX60 measures 189.1″ in length, 81.4″ in width, and 64.4″ in height, with a wheelbase of 116.9″, or about the size of a Tesla Model Y, so you can expect the EX50 to be slightly smaller.

According to the AN report, Volvo’s upcoming electric vehicles will start at around $50,000 in the US. The new 2027 EX60 starts at $58,400, so $50,000 or so would make sense for the EX50.

Will the EX50 be one of them? We will find out soon. Volvo will share more details during its Strategy Update on September 17, where the Swedish automaker will reveal “the most ambitious product plan” in company history.

We look forward to it. Check back for updates.
