Audi is bringing back the A2 as an affordable electric car, and it could have one big advantage over the competition. Ahead of its official debut, the EV was spotted with minimal disguise as new details reveal it will deliver more than 400 miles of driving range.

Audi A2 e-tron prices and driving range

After confirming the A2 will return in all-electric form in March, Audi’s CEO, Gernot Döllner, said the entry-level EV will make “entry into the Audi world easier and more relevant than ever.”

Ahead of its world premiere this fall, Audi revealed prices for the A2 e-tron will start at €38,200 (about $44,000) in Germany with a WLTP driving range of up to 403 miles (649 km).

We also got a better idea of what the final design will look like. While we’ve seen several prototypes out testing, the most recent spy images offer a closer look at Audi’s upcoming EV with hardly any disguise.

An exclusive spy video from Pro-Street.dk reveals two Audi A2 e-tron prototypes in Copenhagen with minimal camouflage.

The electric A2 takes influence from the original egg-shaped MPV, but with a more modern, crossover hatchback-like design. It features Audi’s new design with a closed-off grille and slim LED headlights.

Although the original egg-shaped design was a bit funny-looking, it was also ultra-efficient. The EV retains a similar aerodynamic design to optimize driving range and efficiency.

Launched over 25 years ago, the Audi A2 1.2 TDI became known as the “world’s first four-door three-liter car” with a combined fuel consumption of 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers.

Audi sold over 175,000 A2 models between 2000 and 2005, but ended production after five years, as sales fell short of expectations. The new electric version will carry on its legacy with an efficient, lightweight design.

When the electric A2 e-tron goes on sale this fall, it will be available with four different power outputs: 125 kW, 140 kW, 170 kW, and 240 kW.

Like the new Volkswagen ID.3 Neo, Audi’s entry-level EV is expected to be available with three battery packs: 50 kWh, 58 kWh, and 79 kWh. However, the A2 e-tron will deliver slightly more range at up to 403 miles (649 km).

Starting at €38,200 (about $44,000) in Germany, the A2 e-tron will go on sale this fall as Audi’s most affordable EV. The Q4 e-tron starts at €47,500 ($54,00), or nearly €10,000 more than the electric A2.

Audi said the A2 e-tron will “rejuvenate” the brand. With over 20 new models launched in the past two years, Audi claims it now has the youngest portfolio amongst its rivals.
