Fans reacted as England named Noni Madueke instead of Bukayo Saka in the starting XI for their 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against Norway on Saturday (July 11) in Miami.

Saka started the 3-2 Round of 16 win over co-hosts Mexico at Mexico City on Monday (July 5) and played 57 minutes before he was withdrawn for John Stones as Thomas Tuchel’s side sought to protect their lead with 10 men.

Madueke, who was an unused substitute against El Tri, returns to the starting line-up against the Vikings, concerning fans, with some reckoning Saka might have been the better choice:

“Where’s Saka at man this is where we need him,” one tweeted.

“Not too happy with benching saka but apart from that happy with the lineup hoping madueke can at least prove me wrong COME ON ENGLAND,” another commented.

“It’s finally coming home 🏡 Harry kane ballon dor soon How’s Madueke starting over Saka tho?,” one posted.

“Why would you start Madueke over Saka?,” another tweeted.

“What does Madueke offer on the pitch that’s better than Saka? Please I want to know,” one wrote.

“How can Tommy think Madueke is better than Saka. Fml,” another posted.

The Three Lions are looking to reach the semi-final for the second time in three appearances. Meanwhile, the Vikings are already in unchartered territory, playing their first FIFA World Cup quarter-final after beating five-time champions Brazil in the previous round.

England captain Harry Kane and Norway marksman Erling Haaland are in an enticing race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot award as their teams go head-to-head for a place in the semi-finals next week.

Kane, who won the Golden Boot with six goals in his debut World Cup campaign at Russia 2018, has matched that tally in North America, with his latest strike coming in the Round of 16 win over Mexico.

Meanwhile, Haaland has been on a tear in his maiden World Cup campaign, scoring in all four games. His brace against Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil in the previous round took him to seven goals, which is now one behind leader Kylian Mbappe and Argemtna’s Lionel Messi.
