Trek targets the fat tire e-bike boom with its new throttle-enabled Borrego+

Trek is making a bigger push into the fast-growing fat tire e-bike segment with the launch of the new Borrego+, a Class 2 electric bike that blends adventure-ready capability with commuter-friendly practicality. The company is also offering a faster Borrego+ S variant for riders in markets where Class 3 e-bikes are permitted.

While Trek has long been known for premium analog bikes and mid-drive electric bicycles, the Borrego+ signals a move toward the increasingly popular throttle-equipped fat tire category that has largely been dominated by direct-to-consumer brands.

The new e-bike features a 750W rear hub motor producing 90 Nm of torque, paired with a 720 Wh removable battery rated for up to 60 miles (97 km) of range.

The standard Borrego+ is configured as a 20 mph Class 2 e-bike with both pedal assist and a thumb throttle, while the Borrego+ S raises the assisted top speed to 28 mph as a Class 3 model. Trek notes that the Class 3 version won’t be sold in California due to state regulations.

As expected from a fat tire model, the Borrego+ rolls on 4-inch-wide tires designed to improve traction on loose terrain while also including puncture protection for added durability.

An 80 mm suspension fork helps smooth rough roads and trails, and the upright riding position should appeal to riders looking for comfort over aggressive handling.

Trek has also equipped the Borrego+ with what looks to be a fairly practical feature set. A 440 lb (200 kg) carrying capacity, heavy-duty MIK-compatible rear rack, integrated accessory mounts, fenders, skid plate, brake light, and daytime-visible turn signals make it well-suited for everything from grocery runs to weekend adventures.

The bike also integrates with Trek’s Central app, adding features like a digital bike lock, battery alerts, custom ride modes, and range estimates. The removable top-eject battery is lockable and designed for easy charging on or off the bike.

The Borrego+ is available now through Trek dealers and the company’s website, giving one of the cycling industry’s biggest names a stronger foothold in one of the fastest-growing categories of the North American e-bike market.

Priced at $2,499, the Borrego+ now adds to Trek’s more affordable end of its lineup, focusing on budget shoppers who still want a name brand and nationwide servicing network.
