Brandon Aiyuk is facing the heat for his statement regarding his situation with the San Francisco 49ers. The wide receiver accused the franchise of repeatedly lying to the media about his injury timeline and his intent to play. He also refused to cooperate with standard league protocols, denying reinstatement with the 49ers.

NFL quarterback trainer and Deshaun Watson’s private QB coach, Quincy Avery, shared his stance on the matter on X on Tuesday.

“I don’t think he understands what he’s doing,” Avery tweeted.

By refusing to file a formal petition with the league for reinstatement, Aiyuk isn’t forcing his way out of Northern California but rather trapping himself. Under this scenario, the 49ers have total leverage to leave him on the “Reserve/Left Squad List” indefinitely.

He does not count against their active roster. Since he refuses to report, he won’t be paid a single dime of his 2026 salary, nor can he seek a trade or free-agent contract with any other franchise, including the Washington Commanders.

Aiyuk’s meltdown comes from a medical dispute about his recovery from an ACL tear. According to his post, the 49ers voided his lucrative contract guarantees exactly one year ago, citing missed rehab obligations. Aiyuk pushed back on that narrative in his story, claiming the team has tracking data that proves his compliance.

49ers insider rips Brandon Aiyuk over Jayden Daniels fallout

After spending months trying to force his way out of San Francisco, Brandon Aiyuk found himself at the center of another controversy last week, this time involving his former college teammate and close friend, Jayden Daniels.

The 49ers wide receiver started a beef with the Commanders quarterback and even brought Daniels’ mother into the dispute. 49ers insider Grant Cohn blasted Aiyuk for his behavior.

“What an incredible example of a player throwing his career away simply because he couldn’t stop talking,” Cohn wrote. “Keep in mind, Aiyuk never has been accused of doing anything violent. And before he injured his knee, he was one of the hardest-working players on the team.”

Cohn called Aiyuk’s actions shockingly immature and self-destructive. He added that many teams may no longer want him in their locker room despite his talent. The insider argued that by clashing with one of the few people who could have spoken positively about him in Washington, Aiyuk may have damaged both his reputation and future opportunities.
