Lionel Messi and Argentina are set to face Switzerland in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a matchup which fans believe will be an easy ride for the defending champions.
La Albiceleste locked in a spot in the last eight following a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Egypt. Switzerland, meanwhile, defeated Colombia 4-3 on penalties after a 0-0 scoreline in regular and extra-time.
Thanks for the submission!
The two sides will now clash at the Kansas City Stadium on July 12, and the European side will look to reach the semi-final for the first time at the expense of the reigning champions.
However, some fans have opined that the match will be a walk in the park for Lionel Messi and Argentina. One fan wrote:
“Congratulations Argentina on making the semi finals of the 2026 World Cup. There’s no way Switzerland are beating them… Colombia would’ve been a better match up.
“Switzerland and Colombia both look toothless and they’ve just gone through extra time + pens. Perfect scenario for Argentina, ” a second fan chimed in.
“Colombia are not looking deadly enough, ” a fan wrote.
One fan poked fun at the claims that Messi and Argentina are being favoured by FIFA, writing:
“It is FIFA’s fault that Portugal couldn’t beat Colombia and it is FIFA’s fault that Colombia couldn’t beat Switzerland.”
“Colombia lost.. don’t talk to me at all,” a disappointed fan said.
Lionel Messi overtakes Diego Maradona with new FIFA World Cup record
Lionel Messi was the hero once more for Argentina, providing an assist and scoring one as they beat Egypt 3-2 on Tuesday. The African side were leading 2-0, but in the 79th minute, Messi set up Cristian Romero to make the score 2-1. He then scored in the 83rd minute to make it 2-2, before Enzo Fernandez’s winner late in stoppage time (90+3′).
The 39-year-old has now provided nine assists in the FIFA World Cup, taking him one more than Diego Maradona, with whom he previously shared the record. In addition, he has scored 21 goals from 31 appearances at the tournament.
Should Argentina go all the way to lift the trophy, the Inter Miami superstar would become the first captain to win consecutive FIFA World Cups.
