Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez seemingly mocked England with the iconic Wonderwall soundtrack on a now deleted Instagram story following the 2-1 come-from-behind 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final win in Atlanta on Wednesday (July 15).

Following a goalless first half, the game burst into life in the second, with Anthony Gordon heading in a Morgan Rogers cross from the right in the 55th minute. However, the Three Lions opted to sit back on their slender advantage, allowing the Albiceleste to dictate the pace in the remainder of the game with 88% possession.

Five minutes from time, Lionel Messi set up Fernandez, who let fly from distance to beat Jordan Pickford with a rasping drive as Lionel Scaloni’s side moved back to level terms. Seven minutes later, off another Messi assist, substitute Lautaro Martinez headed in a 92nd-minute winner to eliminate the Three Lions.

A day after the win, Fernandez put up a picture of himself laughing with Leandro Paredes and Messi in an Instagram story, with the famous Wonderall song of English band Oasis playing in the background. The midfielder has since removed the track from his story.

Fernandez and Co. next take on European champions Spain in a mouthwatering title match at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford on Sunday (July 19). Meanwhile, the Three Lions take on France a day earlier in Miami in the third-place play-off.

Argentina forrward Giuliano Simeone paid tribute to his captain Lionel Messi for inspiring the team to a hard-fought win over England and reach a second straight FIFA World Cup final.

Simeone – who started the Three Lions game – is now focussed on doing the hard yards for Messi and the Albiceleste who seek to become the first team in 64 years to successfully defend their FIFA World Cup title.

“Leo is 39 years old,” Simeone said (as per Albiceleste Talk). He has everything a footballer could dream of and is still fighting like as the best. So for us, there’s only one thing left, give everything we have, run for him and for Argentina.”

Messi leads the Golden Boot charts with eight goals and four assists in seven games as he seeks to win the award for the very first time after finishing behind Kylian Mbappe at Qatar 2022.
