Telangana now has 10,000 MBBS seats after NMC approves 810 additional seats

Telangana has crossed the 10,000-mark in MBBS seats after the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved 810 additional seats for the 2026-27 academic year, taking the State’s total intake from 9,440 to 10,250. The expansion places Telangana among only five States in the country with more than 10,000 MBBS seats.

The increase comes as part of the NMCs Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB)’s latest seat matrix released on July 14, which approved 9,911 additional MBBS seats across India, raising the national total from 1.27 lakh to 1.36 lakh.

Of the 810 additional seats allotted to Telangana, 110 have gone to government medical colleges, while the remaining 700 have been distributed among private institutions. The approvals cover 13 existing medical colleges, and a newly-established private medical college receiving its first batch of seats.

With the revised seat matrix, Telangana now has 66 medical colleges offering a combined 10,250 MBBS seats. Private medical colleges account for 5,850 seats, while government institutions account for 4,400 seats.

Among the government colleges, GMC Mahabubnagar and GMC Siddipet each have received 25 additional seats and GMC Nizamabad and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Adilabad have received 30 additional seats each.

The private sector accounts for the bulk of the expansion. Raja Rajeshwari Institute of Medical Sciences (Girls), a newly established college, has been granted approval for 150 MBBS seats. Maheshwara Medical College at Chitkul in Patancheru, MNR Medical College and Hospital, Sangareddy, and Shadan Institute of Medical Sciences, Research Centre and Teaching Hospital have each secured an increase of 100 seats each.

An additional five private medical colleges have received 50 seats each. These are Bhaskar Medical College, Yenkapally; Malla Reddy Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad; Malla Reddy Medical College for Women, Hyderabad; Mamata Academy of Medical Sciences, Bachupally; and SVS Medical College, Mahabubnagar.

The latest seat matrix also suggests Telangana’s position as one of India’s leading destinations for undergraduate medical education. Among all States, only Karnataka with 15,395 MBBS seats, Uttar Pradesh with 14,000, Tamil Nadu with 13,999, Maharashtra with 13,099 and Telangana with 10,250 have crossed the 10,000-seat milestone.
