Marquez Valdes-Scantling has played for six teams and caught passes from four Pro Bowl quarterbacks. On his seventh stop, he is fighting for a roster spot with the Dallas Cowboys.

Dallas already has CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens as its top two receivers. That leaves Valdes-Scantling competing for a backup spot.

Cowboys insider Clarence Hill Jr. gave his take on Saturday on whether Valdes-Scantling could emerge as the team’s WR3 behind Lamb and Pickens.

    “No,” Hill tweeted.

Ryan Flournoy stepped up as WR3 when Lamb missed time last season and holds that spot heading into 2026. KaVontae Turpin contributes on special teams, which adds to his roster security. Valdes-Scantling hasn’t played much on special teams recently, so he needs to earn his place purely as a receiver.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling won back-to-back Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023 and 2024.

Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Marquez Valdes-Scantling got regular first-team reps at minicamp.

“It might just be because wide receiver George Pickens isn’t in attendance for OTAs, but recent free agent signing Marquez Valdes-Scantling picked up a lot of work with the first team Thursday,” Harris wrote on DallasCowboys.com.

“He was targeted by Dak Prescott a handful of times, and even bailed out his new quarterback on a throw that went behind him that he had to swat down to prevent P.J. Locke from intercepting it.”

In 2020, Valdes-Scantling led with 20.9 yards per reception playing for the Green Bay Packers. He caught 33 passes for 690 yards and six touchdowns that season.
