Following the NFL’s ruling on Brendan Sorsby’s petition for supplemental draft eligibility, his attorney, Jeffrey Kessler, has threatened to sue the league. The Roger Goodell-led NFL rejected Sorsby’s petition on Tuesday, putting the quarterback’s football career in limbo.
Responding to the league’s decision, Kessler alleged that it is a violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the law. He vowed to take action.
Thanks for the submission!
“”It is a violation of the CBA and the law. We will pursue this immediately with the NFLPA,” Kessler said, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Brendan Sorsby‘s saga began with a massive gambling scandal, which effectively ended his college career. The talented quarterback previously played for Indiana and Cincinnati before transferring to Texas Tech.
He was handed a permanent ban by the NCAA following his admission to placing thousands of wagers totaling more than $90,000. Notably, Sorsby placed bets on the Indiana Hoosiers during the 2022 and 2023 seasons when he was on the team’s bench.
The 22-year-old challenged the NCAA’s ban and won a temporary injunction, making him eligible for the Raiders this fall. In the ensuing backlash, the Big 12 filed a lawsuit seeking punishments against him and Texas Tech.
Sorsby subsequently abandoned his bid to continue playing in college. Instead, he petitioned the NFL to enter the leagues supplemental draft three business days before the deadline.
Why the NFL rejected Brendan Sorsby’s petition
In response, the NFL ruled that it will not hold a supplemental draft this year, effectively ruling him out of the league until 2027. The league wrote to the quarterback, notifying him of its decision. In the letter, general counsel of the Management Council Larry Ferazani maintained that the league retains sole discretion on whether to hold the event or not.
Furthermore, the league argued that Sorsby’s late petition denied it enough time to meaningfully review his “significant” integrity issues. The NFL also noted that the quarterback’s petition represented an attempt to evade the consequences of his action instead of taking responsibility.
Following the NFL’s decision, Brendan Sorsby’s future has come under speculations. He could wait another year for the 2027 NFL Draft. The league also suggested this in its letter to Sorsby. However, the challenge here is staying in shape ahead of the draft playing no competitive game this fall.
On the other hand, he has the option of playing in an alternative league like the CFL or the UFL.
