A new e-bike company has entered the increasingly crowded commuter e-bike market, but it’s doing so with a strategy that feels notably different from the usual playbook. The new Monarc Tracer combines a powerful Class 3 commuter platform with premium components, a surprising amount of integrated technology, and one feature that almost no other e-bike company includes as standard: a second battery.
Plus, it comes with the backing of the largest e-bike company in North America.
The Tracer is Monarc’s second model released this summer, furthering the offerings from a company founded by Lectric eBikes and benefiting from the leadership of several former leaders and engineers from Lectric. But while Lectric built its reputation around value-focused folding e-bikes, Monarc appears to be targeting a more premium segment, while of course still staying true to Lectric’s often surprisingly affordable pricing.
Now, after the launch of an adventure bike just a few weeks ago, Monarc is back with a new bike designed specifically for daily urban transportation. And with a promotional launch price of $1,899, it comes in at or below the cost of other leading urban e-bikes despite packing significantly better specs and components than the other leading direct-to-consumer leaders.
For example, at the heart of the new Monarc Tracer is a 750W Bafang rear hub motor rated for up to 1,638W peak power and 85 Nm of torque. The bike ships as a Class 2 e-bike but can be configured as Class 1, 2, or 3, with pedal assist up to 28 mph (45 km/h).
But the biggest headline-grabber may be the battery setup. Instead of selling a second battery as an expensive add-on, Monarc includes two removable 48V 15Ah battery packs using LG cells. That gives riders a total of 1,440 Wh of capacity, enough for a claimed range of up to 130 miles (209 km).
While real-world range figures are always heavily dependent on rider weight, terrain, speed, and assist level, there’s no denying that 1,440 Wh is a massive amount of onboard energy for a commuter bike, and should easily provide around twice the range of comparable single battery e-bikes.
Monarc says the dual-battery approach is intended not only to reduce range anxiety but also to extend battery lifespan by allowing riders to alternate between packs rather than cycling a single battery as frequently.
And to give consumers even more peace of mind, the bikes come with impressive 5-year warranties – almost unheard of in the industry.
The Tracer also arrives with an unusually robust technology package.
A custom 3.5-inch touchscreen display offers Bluetooth connectivity, over-the-air software updates, USB charging, app-based locking functionality, and integration with smart accessories. The company says turn-by-turn navigation support is planned via a future software update.
The companion smartphone app appears to be a major part of the ownership experience, with support for accessories such as radar systems, smart helmets, wireless tire pressure monitoring systems, heart rate monitors, and cameras.
From a ride-quality perspective, Monarc has focused heavily on commuter comfort. The bike features an upright riding position, 27.5-inch by 2.1-inch Kenda K-Rad tires, and an 80 mm suspension fork that the company developed in-house. Dubbed the “Gneiss” fork, it uses a reverse-arch design intended to increase stiffness while reducing weight. So if it looks like the fork is on backwards, that’s why.
The drivetrain consists of Shimano’s newer Cues 9-speed system, paired with hydraulic four-piston Star Union Talon P4 brakes and oversized 203 mm front and 180 mm rear rotors.
The bike is available in both step-through and high-step frame styles and supports a hefty 420 lb (190 kg) gross payload. Integrated lighting includes a 494-lumen headlight (props for not just rounding up to 500 lumens, I guess?) as well as a taillight built into the rear rack that functions as a brake light and turn signals.
Safety certifications aren’t lacking, either. The Tracer carries UL 2849 certification for the complete e-bike system and UL 2271 certification for the batteries.
Perhaps most surprising of all is that previously mentioned warranty. Monarc is backing the Tracer with a five-year warranty, significantly longer than the one- or two-year coverage typically offered in the direct-to-consumer e-bike industry.
At around 66-68 lb (30-31 kg) depending on frame style, the Tracer certainly isn’t lightweight. But considering the dual batteries, unique suspension fork, integrated rack, lighting system, and commuter-focused equipment package, it’s also not particularly heavy for what it offers. Sure, it’s heavy – but not terribly so by commuter e-bike standards.
And priced at US $1,899 during the launch, that pretty much knocks it out of the park when you compare the spec sheets and component lists of the other major players in this price range.
Electrek’s Take
There’s no shortage of commuter e-bikes these days, which means new entrants need a compelling reason for riders to pay attention. Monarc appears to understand that, and does so by combining Lectric’s penchant for high value propositions with a new level of premium design and compentry we haven’t seen from Lectric before.
What stands out to me isn’t necessarily any single feature, but rather how many premium features the company has managed to combine into one package. A dual-battery offering, Shimano Cues drivetrain, quad-piston hydraulic brakes, app connectivity, touchscreen display, integrated turn signals, and a five-year warranty all on the same bike is fairly unusual.
I also appreciate that Monarc seems focused on actual transportation rather than simply chasing headline-grabbing power figures. Yes, the motor is powerful, but the messaging throughout the bike’s design centers on comfort, commuting, reliability, and reducing friction in everyday riding.
The included second battery is particularly interesting. Most e-bike companies happily sell you a spare battery for $500-$800 after you’ve already bought the bike. Including one from day one is a bold move that immediately adds real-world value.
The commuter e-bike market is one of the most competitive segments in the industry right now, and that means Monarc has its work cut out for it here. But if the company can deliver on the quality, ride feel, and customer support that it’s promising, the Tracer looks like a strong first entry from a team that clearly knows the e-bike business. And with the kind of value they’re offering, the odds seem to be in their favor.
