Clear and obvious mistake by the referee

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has claimed that Lionel Messi‘s FIFA World Cup record-setting goal should not have counted. He pointed a ta foul on Xaver Schlager in the build-up and believes that the referee should have pulled the play back.

Speaking on FOX Sports, Schmeichel said the referee missed a clear foul on Schlager, and VAR also failed to do their job. He insists that they should have informed the referee about it and said:

“I don’t think that goal should have stood. Think about how they get the [to] penalty [box], this is a kick from behind through Xaver Schlager. This is a free kick, Mac Allister has kicked the player down. That should have been a free-kick. Var should have taken that back. That is a clear and obvious mistake by the referee. And for that I feel a little bit frustrated.” (via Mirror)

Lionel Messi missed an early penalty before scoring the goal in the 39th minute to surpass Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 goals at the FIFA World Cup. The Argentine added another in the final seconds of the game to make it 2-0 to Argentina and take his tally to 18.

He spoke to the media after the game, admitting that he was too tired. He was quizzed about his favourite goal out of the 18 scored at the FIFA World Cup and he said:

“I’m tired and I’m running on fumes. It’s hard to think. But I’m enjoying this moment and looking forward to being with my teammates. It’s been spectacular how it has all unfolded. I had the penalty, which could have increased my tally. But perhaps the others wouldn’t have come, you never know. I’m happy with the team.”

Lionel Messi has scored five goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and leads the race for the Golden Boot. Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe also scored a brace today, June 22, to make it four each in their tally.

Can Lionel Messi finish with another FIFA World Cup Golden Boot?

Lionel Messi has scored all five goals for Argentina so far at this FIFA World Cup, but has no breathing space in the Golden Boot race. Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe are giving him a tough chase, and are unlikely to stop.

The two young strikers face off next week in the third group stage match, and are unlikely to rest despite their sides sealing qualification. On the other hand, Lionel Messi might get a much-needed rest after playing the full game against Austria.
