Lionel Messi took to Instagram to celebrate Argentina’s victory over Austria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. La Albiceleste defeated the European side 2-0 at the Dallas Stadium on Monday, June 22, with Messi inspiring the victory with a brace.

Despite missing a penalty early on in the match, Messi scored once in each half (38′, 90+5′) to propel his team to a resounding triumph. In doing so, he broke the record for most goals scored by a single player in the FIFA World Cup, surpassing Miroslav Klose and taking his tally to 18 goals from 28 matches.

Taking to his Instagram, Messi posted a series of photos from the game, which he described as a ‘complicated match’. He captioned the post (as translated from Spanish):

“Another victory in a complicated match, which serves us to take a little step further.”

The victory ensured Argentina’s place in the Round of 32 as they look to go all the way and defend the title they won four years ago in Qatar. As for Lionel Messi, the mercurial forward continues to excite fans with his electric performance in what is his last major international outing.

Argentina will face Jordan next in a dead rubber tie for the South Americans at the Dallas Stadium on June 27.

Lionel Messi breaks four FIFA World Cup records in win over Austria

While the Argentina captain made the headlines majorly for becoming the FIFA World Cup leading scorer, he also broke three additional records in the 2-0 win over Austria.

Lionel Messi became the player with the most appearances in the FIFA World Cup, having made 28 appearances across six editions since his debut in 2006. He also set the record for most matches won by a player at the quadriennial tournament (18). The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also became the player with the most minutes played in the FIFA World Cup (2,489).

Should Messi guide Argentina to glory, he would become the first captain to win consecutive FIFA World Cups. Given their current form, Lionel Scaloni’s team are strong favourites to defend their title.
