WWE SmackDown delivered a massive shock tonight. The United States Championship picture desperately needed a clear challenger, and fans expected a predictable outcome when the company announced a high-stakes qualifier to determine the next contender. Instead, the blue brand produced one of the biggest upsets as Ricky Saints won.
Carmelo Hayes and Ricky Saints are currently embroiled in an escalating rivalry. Tonight, they collided in a WWE United States Championship Number One Contender’s match. Heading into the bout, both stars held exactly one victory over each other.
Thanks for the submission!
Hayes took charge right after the opening bell. He used his speed to hit a springboard clothesline, putting Saints straight on the mat. The former NXT Champion kept the pressure on by targeting Saints’ left arm with several tight submission holds. Melo cut off the ring every time his opponent tried to fight back.
Things changed midway through the bout. Hayes grew too confident and wasted time taunting the Kansas City crowd. He went for his signature First 48, but Saints completely dodged the attack. Saints took advantage of the miss and hit a stiff lariat to drop Hayes.
The final minutes saw both men trading heavy strikes in the middle of the ring. Hayes eventually climbed the top rope, looking to hit the Nothing But Net leg drop. Saints got up fast, rushed the corner, and threw Hayes down with a high superplex. When Hayes got back to his feet, The Absolute One charged forward and hit a fast spear. He immediately picked Hayes up and executed the Roshambo, but Melo countered with First 48.
Ricky Saints then shoved Carmelo Hayes into the exposed turnbuckle again to secure the massive upset on WWE SmackDown.
With this win, Saints officially advances to challenge the current United States Champion, Trick Williams, at the upcoming WWE Night of Champions Premium Live Event on June 27 in Riyadh.
