The New York Yankees have struggled with injuries this season and their issues worsened after Yankees skipper Aaron Boone revealed a setback in Giancarlo Stanton’s recovery.

Stanton, who has not featured for the Yankees since April due to a calf strain, was expected to return to the lineup during the series against the Chicago White Sox next week.

However, Boone said that Stanton’s return has been delayed because he felt a tweak/twinge in his calf while hitting on the field at Yankee Stadium and running out balls this week.

“He felt a little something in there a day or two ago, so that’s kind of slowed him down,” Boone said. “I expected him back early in this homestand. That’s in jeopardy now.”

The 36-year-old was batting .256 (23-for-90) with six doubles, three homers and 14 RBIs in 24 games before his injury and could be sent for more imaging after his latest setback.

Ben Rice, who is having a breakthrough year, has been utilized as the designated hitter in Stanton’s absence.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone admitted “no getting around” injuries

The Yankees dealt with injuries to Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon at the start of the season and their offense took a big blow after three-time MVP Aaron Judge suffered a rib injury.

Judge was placed on the injured list earlier this month and is expected to be out until July or August. Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the injury crisis but hailed it as an “opportunity” for young players to step up.

“No getting around it, we’ve lost some key people,” Boone said. “It’s part of it. The (162 game schedule) is coming for you. I feel like we’re way more equipped to deal with it than we have been in some years. It’s a great opportunity for some of our young players.”

The Yankees added another offensive piece to the long list as Trent Grisham was placed on the 10-day IL on Saturday.
