The Mitsubishi Eclipse is finally going electric with a little help from Nissan. Set to go on sale in the next few weeks, Mitsubishi unveiled the new Eclipse Sportback EV for the first time.

When is Mitsubishi launching the Eclipse Sportback EV?

Although its design has evolved over the years, the Eclipse has been a staple in Mitsubishi’s lineup since it first went on sale in North America in 1990.

By early fall, it will be available with a fully electric powertrain for the first time. Mitsubishi revealed the first images of the 2027 Eclipse Sportback EV on Tuesday, an electric crossover SUV that might look a little familiar.

That’s because the new EV is based on the new Nissan LEAF as part of the Japanese automaker’s alliance.

While it will use the same underpinnings as the third-generation LEAF (see our review), and looks like a near-replica, Mitsubishi promises the electric Eclipse will feature the brand’s unique style to differentiate it. It’s a similar alliance to the Toyota-Subaru partnership.

You can see in the images that the Eclipse EV has a slightly different front- and rear-end design, as well as Mitsubishi’s logo and Triple Diamond branding.

Outside of that, it’s basically the new Nissan LEAF in disguise. Mitsubishi will reveal prices and specs closer to launch, but we expect the new EV will be available with the same 75 kWh battery and 174 hp front-mounted electric motor as the LEAF, which provides an EPA-estimated range of up to 303 miles.

Like the new Nissan LEAF (shown above), the Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback EV will also likely feature a native NACS charge port.

Since the 2026 LEAF starts at just under $30,000, Mitsubishi’s new EV will likely be priced similarly, making it one of the most affordable EVs in the US, alongside the new Chevy Bolt.
