Sivaganga District Police have registered a case against two private doctors in connection with an incident wherein a boy lost his penis due to a faulty surgery performed at a private hospital in Karaikudi in Sivaganga district.

The police said Meenakshi Sundaram, a resident of Karaikudi, lodged a complaint that his 10-year-old son lost his penis due to the wrong surgery and subsequent treatment provided at the hospital.

The complainant said: “We have only one son. He had difficulty in passing urine. Following this, we admitted him to a private hospital. There, they performed a surgery on him on May 21. Within a few days of returning home after the treatment, my son’s private part became gangrenous.

“I informed the doctor at the private hospital who performed the surgery about this. At that time, claiming that another doctor had performed the surgery, he sent us to that doctor’s hospital. When we went there, that doctor also did not respond properly and gave us vague replies. In the meantime, our son’s health condition worsened. The two [Karaikudi] doctors then threatened us to immediately take him to a specific private hospital in Madurai,” he added.

However, without listening to them, the family members admitted the boy to a different private hospital in Madurai. There, the doctors told them that since the patient’s penis had become gangrenous, he could survive only if it was removed.

“Having no other choice to save our son, we also agreed. Subsequently, they performed a surgery and removed the organ. My son’s life has been ruined due to the wrong treatment provided at the private hospital,” he alleged.

“Therefore, action must be taken against the doctors who performed the wrong surgery and threatened us, as well as against the hospital concerned,” Mr. Meenakshi Sundaram stated in the complaint.

Karaikudi North Police registered a case against two private doctors, whose names were given as Somasundaram and Kamachi Chandran. Further investigation is on.
