Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell caused a stir on social media when he accidentally referred to quarterback J.J. McCarthy as his “former” captain while speaking to the media on Thursday. O’Connell was answering a question about how McCarthy was handling the arrival of quarterback Kyler Murray, who signed with Minnesota in the offseason, when he made a Freudian slip.

“I think he’s handling it really well. He’s been great in the meeting rooms,” O’Connell said. “As a former, uh, as a captain, and a guy that helps lead our team, he’s been phenomenal.”

Fans on social media had some interesting reactions to O’Connell’s Freudian slip.

“He did slip up and say former captain. He knows JJ is already the back up,” one tweeted.

@JasonHarmonNFL He did slip up and say former captain 🤣 He knows JJ is already the back up

“Oh wow did he slip up saying former before saying captain,” another added.

“My man KOC is way too buttoned up for this to be a slip up. It’s Kyler SZN,” a third commented.

Here are a few more reactions.

“As a FORMER captain slip there,” one wrote.

“KOC slips up and says McCarthy is a FORMER captain lol,” another added.

“Oooof was that ‘Former’ word just slip out of his mouth ?” a third commented.

The Vikings took McCarthy with the No. 10 pick in the 2024 NFL draft. He was sidelined for his rookie season due to a torn meniscus in his right knee that he suffered in preseason.

Last season, J.J. McCarthy recorded 1,632 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and four rushing TDs across 10 games, posting a 6-4 record. The Vikings didn’t qualify for the playoffs, and the QB came under fire for most of his struggles.

McCarthy is expected to compete with Murray for the Vikings’ QB1 role for the 2026 season.
