Azerbaijan and Malta are set to meet in an international friendly match at the Haladas Sportkomplexum in Hungary on Friday. Both teams are looking ahead to the UEFA Nations League later this year, with neither side involved in the World Cup.
Malta and Azerbaijan are in League D of the Nations League, alongside the lowest-ranked national teams in Europe, and compete in a round-robin format, with each team playing the others both at home and away.
Thanks for the submission!
Azerbaijan failed to qualify for the World Cup after finishing their UEFA qualification campaign at the bottom of Group D, earning no points against France, Ukraine, and Iceland.
Milli have not played any friendly matches this year, but they will have a second match this month against San Marino on 9 June.
Their UEFA Nations League campaign in the last few months of the year will involve home and away matches against Lithuania and Liechtenstein.
Azerbaijan must find a way to be more consistent if they are to challenge those teams and improve their ranking and prospects in European football.
Meanwhile, Malta will also be focused on preparing for the UEFA Nations League, where they will be facing Gibraltar and Andorra in League D, Group 1.
Malta played a friendly match against Slovakia at MOL Arena on Monday, losing 2-1 to the Falcons but coming very close to holding their opponents to a draw.
Slovakia opened the scoring nine minutes into the match through Lukas Haraslin, but Malta’s Joseph Mbong equalized in the 37th minute. It looked as though the Knights were about to secure a rare away draw before a 97th-minute strike from Roland Galcik saved Slovakia’s blushes.

Azerbaijan vs Malta prediction
Both teams may consider this match a great opportunity to test their depth and see how they fare against a fellow League D side ahead of their competitive fixtures in a few months.
As this is a match between rivals of a similar quality on neutral ground, we expect it to end in a low-scoring draw.
