'You are arrogant': Mamata Banerjee heard scolding Kolkata hospital authorities

NEW DELHI: A video purportedly showing TMC chief Mamata Banerjee confronting hospital authorities at Kolkata’s Belle Vue Hospital, where her nephew and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee was being treated following an alleged attack has gone viral on social media. In the video, Banerjee is seen speaking sharply to hospital officials and appears to target Belle Vue Hospital CEO Pradip Tandon. According to the viral clip, she can be heard saying, “You’re running the hospital, you are arrogant.”The footage also shows Abhishek Banerjee lying on a stretcher as medical staff attend to him.Sharing the video on X, BJP commentator Sudhanidhi Bandyopadhyay wrote: “Last night Mamata Banerjee was shouting at the Hospital Authorities of Belle Vue & especially against Mr. Pradip Tandon (CEO), her arrogance isn’t going away either.”BJP West Bengal chief spokesperson also shared the video on X and accused TMC supremo of pressuring hospital authorities despite medical assessments reportedly indicating that Abhishek had not suffered any major injuries.“Shame on Mamata Banerjee for allegedly threatening Belle Vue Hospital CEO Pradeep Tandon and pressuring hospital authorities to admit Abhishek Banerjee despite medical reports indicating no significant injuries,” he wrote. “It represents a disturbing attempt to misuse medical institutions for political narratives. Hospitals exist to serve patients based on medical necessity, not political convenience. Any effort to intimidate doctors, administrators, or healthcare institutions undermines public trust and violates the basic principles of democracy and governance,” he further wrote. The video surfaced amid a political storm over the alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee during his visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district on Saturday.According to West Bengal police, five people have been arrested in connection with the attack, ANI reported. Visuals from the scene showed his shirt torn during the scuffle as security personnel escorted him away.Following the incident, Mamata Banerjee alleged that hospitals and doctors were being pressured over Abhishek Banerjee’s treatment. Addressing reporters, she claimed that hospital authorities had received threatening calls and were allegedly being discouraged from admitting the TMC MP despite medical advice.“Those who are in power are threatening all the hospitals and the maximum authorities not to admit Abhishek Banerjee because they don’t want him to be treated,” Banerjee alleged.“When I was sitting with the hospital administrator, he told me that he was getting threat calls from the police. Doctors are sad, but they are pressured,” she said. The allegations triggered a fresh political row, with Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi expressing support for Abhishek Banerjee and condemning the attack. According to Mamata Banerjee, Rahul personally called her and offered assistance, including helping arrange treatment for the TMC leader outside West Bengal if required. The BJP has denied any involvement in the attack, while several Opposition leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav have condemned the incident and demanded action against those responsible.
