Bharathiar University (BU) has partnered with Siemens Healthineers, India, to establish a facility on its campus to provide training in advanced radiation treatment planning systems used in cancer therapy.

Named BU-Varian TPS Training Centre, it envisages strengthening academic training, research and professional skill development.

Registrar R. Rajavel exchanged the agreement document with Malti Sachdev, senior vice-president and head– Varian, India and Territories, Siemens Healthineers, India, recently.

A press release issued by Bharathiar University said the centre will facilitate specialised training in Eclipse-based treatment planning technologies, including 3DCRT, IMRT, VMAT and Brachytherapy, for students, researchers, faculty members and healthcare professionals.

The facility is expected to be used for advanced treatment planning education and research in India against the backdrop of radiation treatment playing a vital role in modern cancer therapy by enabling accurate delivery of radiation to cancerous tissues while minimising exposure to healthy organs, the release said.

The Eclipse Treatment Planning System associated with Varian technology is globally recognised for its advanced applications in radiation oncology. Through this facility, BU aims to provide students and researchers with direct exposure to internationally recognised treatment planning technologies widely used in leading hospitals and cancer centres around the world, the Registrar said.

Besides facilitating academic learning, practical training, research projects and workshops, the facility will also be utilised for faculty development programmes, and collaborative activities related to medical physics and radiation oncology, Mr. Rajavel said.

    V. Arun Roy, Secretary, Higher Education Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, and Convenor of the Vice-Chancellor’s Committee, Bharathiar University, lauded what he described as innovative academic–industry collaboration for the benefit of students, researchers, faculty members and healthcare professionals.

Industry-linked academic partnerships are essential for strengthening higher education and enhancing practical learning opportunities for students, Mr. Arun said.

According to Ms. Malti Sachdev, the proposed BU–Varian TPS Training Centre would be the first facility of its kind in India.
