The Yuan Plus, sold overseas as the Atto 3, is among BYD’s best-selling vehicles. After launching the third-generation model with a longer driving range and Flash Charging, BYD said the new EV received over 30,000 orders in one week.

BYD officially launched the third-gen Yuan Plus on March 21, starting at just 119,900 yuan ($17,600). While that’s a bit more expensive than the outgoing model’s starting price of 115,800 yuan ($17,000), it received several major upgrades.

The Yuan Plus is among the first mass-market EVs to feature BYD’s new Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging system, introduced during its Disruptive Tech event in March.

Available with two battery sizes: 57.5 kWh or 68.5 kWh, the electric SUV offers CLTC driving ranges of up to 540 km (335 miles) and 630 km (391 miles), respectively.

BYD’s new Flash Charging tech enables it to recharge from 10% to 70% in as little as five minutes. For a full recharge (10% to 97%), it takes just nine minutes. Even in temperatures as low as -30°C (-22°C), BYD said you can recharge the battery from 20% to 97% in 12 minutes.

A stylish electric SUV with more than enough driving range, ultra-fast charging, advanced in-car tech, and more for under $20,000? It already looks like a hit.

According to Lu Tian, general manager of BYD’s Dynasty Series, the third-generation Yuan Plus received over 30,000 orders in its first week on the market.

Tian said the Yuan Plus has been “a bestseller since launch” with the updated version already off to a strong start.

The new model is equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor, offering outputs of either 268 hp (200 kW) or 321 hp (240 kW).

Buyers can upgrade to BYD’s God’s Eye B (DiPilot 300) ADAS system, which adds a roof-mounted LiDAR for an extra 12,000 yuan ($1,800). The system includes 30 advanced cameras and sensors, along with LiDAR, to support safety and convenience features, including assisted driving on highways and in cities, as well as automated parking.

The interior has been refreshed with BYD’s latest cabin design. A large 15.6″ floating infotainment sits at the center with a smaller display screen above the drive.

At an entry-level price, the electric SUV offers premium features such as a built-in refrigerator, head-up display (HUD), AI voice assistant, and reclining seats.

The Yuan Plus (Atto 3) remains one of BYD’s most popular vehicles, but it’s facing new competition from rivals like the Geely Galaxy E5 in an increasingly crowded compact SUV market.

BYD is betting on new tech, including its Blade Batteries and Flash Charging tech, to keep its edge over the competition. So far, it appears to be paying off. Other updated vehicles with the new tech have received over 100,000 orders.

BYD is now launching the new battery and charging tech overseas, starting with the Denza Z9 GT in Europe, the UK, and other global markets. The new Atto 3 is expected to receive similar upgrades.

Last year, the Atto 3 (Yuan Plus) was the world’s 13th-best-selling EV, with nearly 224,000 deliveries. Will the improvements help it climb the rankings this year?
