New Delhi: Infrastructure projects worth ₹150 crore or higher recorded a cumulative cost overrun of ₹5.6 lakh crore as of April, according to a monthly government report released Monday.

The total revised cost of 1,981 projects reached ₹42.8 lakh crore, up from the original estimate of ₹37.1 lakh crore.

The report did not mention the number of projects experiencing cost overruns. The projects are monitored across 17 central ministries/departments by the ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI).

“The cumulative expenditure incurred on these projects stands at ₹20.36 lakh crore, accounting for approximately 47.59% of the revised project cost, indicating steady progress in project implementation,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ongoing projects include 814 mega projects, each costing ₹1,000 crore or more, with an original estimated value of ₹31.6 lakh crore. It also includes 1,167 major projects valued between ₹150 crore and ₹1,000 crore, collectively estimated at ₹5.5 lakh crore.
